Grenache Syrah Masera 2015 @2700, W&G, 190525 — 7 years ago

2008 Sine Qua Non "The Duel" Grenache. "Two Losers, Two Winners." 15.8% alcohol. Yet another less than perfect Wine Advocate scorer, but if that's not perfection screaming from my glass right now, it's mighty close. Expressive nose of lilacs, dark fruits, anise and fresh baked blueberry pie. On the palate, a potpourri of liquefied purple flowers and sweet kirsch. Typical SQN satisfying and lengthy finish. I think I would have to be tasting all these barrel aged wines side by side by side before I might be able to rank them, and even then, I expect it would be difficult to distinguish a 10 from a 9.8. I've not found much that can approach Manfred's barrel aged wines for shear opulence. Maybe @justinsmith and @saxumvineyards Bone Rock in a great year, or perhaps @philippecambie with his Clos Saint Jean Sanctus Sanctorum. Let's face it, my followers know I'm perhaps Manfred's biggest fan. Would I let ya'll know if I tasted an SQN that was anything less than great? So far, we haven't had to worry as we've not even been close. — 8 years ago
Dried fruit, condensed yellow floral notes, very light petroleum, grape fruit, lemon. — 9 years ago
Cork broke on us so we were worried but all was well. Earthy and chewy but very delicious. With steak. — 10 years ago

2018 Domaine de l'Ermitage "Victor" Costières de Nîmes Blanc
Price: $9.99
Costières de Nîmes is at the southernmost part of the Rhône Valley, on the opposite bank from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. One of our best new finds is Château de l'Ermitage, which produces three terrific values with immanent drinkability. The estate's history traces back to the 12th century when the winery produced wine for the pilgrims of St-Jacques de Compostelle who were traveling the Santiago de Compostela. The property is now owned by the Castillon family, and today Michel and his son Jerome manage the vineyards and winemaking. The "Victor" is named for the first member of the Castillon family to own the property. The blend is 60% Roussanne, 30% Grenache Blanc, and 10% Viognier. The soil consists of large pebbles from the Durance river which long predates the Rhône and vines average 20 years. Expect a richer palate from the Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, with lovely aromatics from the Viognier. The winery is certified Terra Vitis (sustainable).

Another super interesting wine by Deirdre Heikin. This blend is 90% Marquette and 10% La Crescent. Two northern american grape variety and the wine shows that non vitis vinifera varieties can make very good wine. The nose is a bit foxy at first, and the taste is then very interesting, good acidity level, slightly sour, notes of herbs and berries but still very round. This profiles definitely reminds me of alpine wines such as Mondeuse or even l’Etraire de la Dui, although these are vitis vinifera.
Sign of a real good wine: this bottle only got better on day 2 and 3...
