Naramata Syrah 2016

I had never tried anything from these guys before, but this is a winner. Literally. It cleaned up at a number of blind tasting this year and did not disappoint. Dark cherry, blackberry, floral a bit of smoke. Long finish with smooth feel, but detectable tannins. — 8 years ago

I’m quite a fan of Deep Roots on the Naramata Bench. They aren’t well known but produce some amazing Okanagan wines. Cheers! 🍷🇨🇦

Mount Pleasant Wines

Maurice O'Shea Hunter Valley Shiraz 2006

Deep Crimson with purple rim. Has the colour of a less than 5 year old wine. Earthy tarry aromas. On the palate very savoury and enticing with meaty notes. Old School Hunter Valley Shiraz from Vineyards worked by the legendary Maurice O'Shea in the 1940s and 50s. Like the wines O'Shea made this will live for decades although this wine is more full bodied than these wines from that era. About 10 years ago I was lucky to buy a 1952 (my birth year) at Auction made by the legend. Still holding up at 50+ years of age and barely medium bodied. Had another bottle 457 weeks later on 22/4/26. This was the ripe rich South Australian model which thankfully they have left behind and returned to their medium bodied roots. This was dense Ruby and opaque. Ripe rich and tarry. A full bodied palate with great length and pronounced tannins. Already 20 years old and somewhat of a pup. Could cellar for at least another 10 years. Had another bottle on 23rd April 2026 with consistent notes. This is a huge wine and not true to the Hunter Valley style. Rich ripe and tannic. Will cellar for another 5 to 10 years plus. — 9 years ago

@David L There was a very good book written about Maurice O'Shea called "The Wine Hunter " written by Aussie Wine Journalist, Campbell Mattinson. The difficulties making wine with no power (no refrigeration) and the vagaries of vintage in the Hunter where it would often rain just prior to vintage - still often a problem for Hunter winemakers today. I remember it got so frustrating ( his obsession cost him his marriage) that he just sat down in the Vineyard and cried. Despite these huge obstacles OShea crafted some of the most remarkable wines ever made in Australia from the Old Paddock and Old Hill - still used today by current Mount Pleasant winemaker Jim Chatto. O'Shea along with Colin Preece (Seppelt) and Max Schubert (Penfolds Grange) are recognised as Australia's greatest winemakers in the formation of Australia's table wine industry. Mainly fortifieds before they came along.

California Red Blend 2011

This is a very nice red blend! Great find! Not too sweet. Has kind of a smoky flavor which are from the chocolate notes. The chocolate and caramel flavor a blend so well with the black cherry, raspberry and vanilla. Smooth texture. — 12 years ago

Beaulieu Vineyard

Reserve Tapestry Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2014

Deep roots of Beaulieu were first planted back in 1900, when founder Georges de Latour noticed similarities with his native Bordeaux and declared the Napa Valley ideal for winemaking. A blend of 76% Cab Sauv, 13% Merlot, 11% of Cab Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Aromas of sweet dark berry fruit and earthy floral scents. On the palate blackberry and currants, spicy notes on full soft ripe tannins, nice mouthfeel, lingering finish ending with earthy mineral character. — 7 years ago

Cascina delle Rose

Rio Sordo Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2015

Bright and zingy with tensile tannins. Hints of cherries and raspberries, with a garnishing of basil and oregano. Rio Sordo indicates an underground river that makes the vines muscular at the roots. Quite the entertaining wine, full of surprises. — 8 years ago

Egly-Ouriet

Vieilles Vignes de Pinot Noir Ambonnay Brut Grand Cru Blanc De Noirs Champagne

My favourite cuvée from Egly - 100% Pinot Noir. No Pinot Meunière Delectable. Only 30 cms of Top soil and the roots go straight into the chalk. One could smell the chalky minerality. Average age of the vines is 40 years - with the oldest planted in Ambonnay in 1946 with base Wine coming from the 2009 and 2010 vintages. Great power Flavour and Intensity. — 8 years ago

@Weijie Shi You will not regret it. A relative bargain when compared to Krug Clos de Ambonnay at around $4,500 AUD which is further down the slope from Egly’s Vineyards. The Egly Champagne is around $370AUD.

Château Lynch-Bages

Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1990

So in the battle is who is the best child... we paired the 88 vs the 90 (son vs daughter birth year). Both were outstanding but the 88 had more age in the color and softness on the nose and palate. Family currently arguing over density but for me the 90 was more dense. Lots of mixed fruit leather smoke and terroir which is very French but great for those who enjoy it. So in the name of family peace we rate both as outstanding but the 90 (the daughter) is a bit bigger. Cheers — 10 years ago

Ancient Roots

California Dark Red Blend 2014

I love this blend. The obvious comparison would be Apothic Dark, but It is not as dark or heavy as Apothic yet even though I love a heavy full bodied wine this wine has a perfect blend of light and dark. It is much easier to drink than Apothic Dark without loosing the good flavor. Because it's a blend I can't put my finger on the exact tones of this wine but it feels quite neutral with an easy finish — 10 years ago

Belle Glos

Las Alturas Vineyard Pinot Noir 2014

Winemaker Joseph J. Wagner is a 4th generation winemaker from a family with farming and winemaking roots in the Napa Valley since 1906. Deep Ruby (darkest Pinot almost looks like a Cab) with aromas of ripe berries and spice notes. The palate shows rich black fruits, blackberries, plums and black cherries, vanilla spice, cedar and cacao. Rich soft tannins, firm acidity on lingering finish ending with mineral tones. Nice! — 9 years ago

Carlton Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir 2012

Greg Ballington
8.9

First of the three Pinot Noirs sent to us by Chris. Strong garnet red with a moderate intensity. More opaque than the Yamhill Springs. Nose was subtle to start with some bright red cherries and opened up to some purple floral notes, cherry cola and an undertone of forest floor. The floral notes definitely took over as time went on. Palate was coated in cherries with undertones of lavender and herbs like sage. Moderate acidity (7/10) with a smoother and more rounded moderate body than the Yamhill Springs. Moderate plus finish. Great experience with some single vineyard Pinots! Drink till 2019. — 10 years ago
