Renegade Wine dinner series at Rebelle NYC presented by sommelier Patrick Cappiello. Focus was on Cab Franc: 15 wines paired with 5 courses. Posting a few favorites.
This was WOTN for me. First thing I noticed - and could hardly believe - was how bright red the wine still was being 38 years old. There was some funk on the nose but a ton of fruit as well. The fruit stood out on the palate - and the wine had a brightness to it I couldn't believe. Flavors of raspberries and gravel and still had a great acidity. The somm did note that there is a lot of bottle variation. He opened the same vintage recently and it was all mushrooms and little fruit - so he felt his bottle was a little atypical. But that worked for me. Paired well with Comte. — 8 years ago

Really very nice. Ruby red and clear in the glass. Quite floral. Precise with good minerality and acid. Thoroughly enjoyable from a sort of renegade producer just outside Madrid. — 7 years ago

I lost my notes but remembered really enjoying this and how balanced it was on both the savory/fruit profile as well as the tannin/acid front.

Was excited to see this on the list. A very French style of Cab Franc - but a nice balance of savory and fruit. A touch sour but very smooth, round and refreshing. Was excellent with food (beet tartare).

This tastes definitively like a persimmon with a knife-shaped seed. Like a steaming cup of lapsang souchong in an Ozarkian log cabin. This is that wine you pine for once every three years when you have reason to splurge a little, when you recall there is that one, renegade pinot noir that dares to be bold. — 8 years ago

An excellent wine, full bodied and vibrant. Flavors of cherry. Nice acidity very light tannins. Definitely out of my comfort zone and was surprised at how well this held up. — 8 years ago
Thought provoking. Mild menthol aromas and a little bit of greenery. Stem like, but pleasant. Textured and deep, potting soil and rocks scattered as a backdrop. Digging for more and continuing to discover more of the treasure. Does not wear heart on her sleeve. do some work, dig a little. Then harvest the fruits of your labor. Salute to female winemakers. An underrepresented breed. Renegade women following no rules but quality. IGT Toscana — 9 years ago
