Randy Hester

Domaine Servin

Montée de Tonnerre Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay

Lemon rind on the nose, some salinity and mineral, but in a supporting role to more plush, seeetnees. The green apple of our mind. White flowers. I get a touch of nice, not quite ripe clalymrna ( sp) green fig on the inhale finish.
The palate has nice acidity, racing for your palates corners, more green apple and fig, it’s not especially long or deep, but a ‘22 may be infanticide. Quite refreshing. With Lemon, Basil, and Thyme roasted Rainbow Trout it is, as Servin says “ delicat et elegant”.

Equipo Navazos

Navazos-Niepoort Vino Blanco Palomino Fino 2020

Upon opening and initial pour, this is severe in its dryness and austerity. Brings to mind ( well, my warped mind), very pale tanned blonde leather upholstery,Saddle leather.,Baguettes. With the sea and salt marsh hanging back. Let it sit and air for a bit while I prepared chicken breasts salmoriglio with lots of lemon, come back and it sings with matching acidity and on the finish, an interesting broad dried orange peel that is perfectly there. On day two, the dried orange peel comes to the nose, and a sweet, malty character makes itself known in the mid palate.
A weirdo let’s make Manzanilla with no fortification by Navazos and Niepoort. Rewards aging. Definitely a “table wine” for Sherry freaks. I count myself as one.

Oakdale Road Willow Creek District Paso Robles Zinfandel 2020

The label has a nice tree on it. That seems to be a thing for the labels down there in Paso. Bottle is heavy duty for aging I guess. 5 year old Zin qualifies as aged no doubt. Cool is classic CA Zin with bright red and a hint of rusty edge. Nose has that jammy and pie crust aroma expected in Zinfandel from warm spots. Flavors are chewy and dense. There is that smoked cherry cordial deal there, but also some roasted red peppers and salted fruit flavored licorice. bar-b-qued pork ribs. This is excellent Zin. A classic representation of the good ones. — 2 years ago

This wine is made by Michel Rolland. Large and in charge merlot. Mocha, sweet pipe tobacco, and a lot of ripe blackberry. Nutmeg and cinnamon. Cab lovers merlot.

Caprili

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2018

They will say “ Burgundian”. An hour of air with a little chill, a nice nose of blood, forest, morello cherries, spices, everything knit together well. The palate , especially against Marcella Hazan’s Bolognese, gives really nice acid/tannin balance and then the fruit.
Or should I say the fruit and tertiary flavors, sense. Nice middling forest floor, cherries(dried), some leather. A lovely BdM. I wouldn’t say for very long holding, but delicious now and the next few years.

Fun afternoon at Classic with great company. Glad you could join us Bryan.

This is unicorn wine, ladies and gentlemen. Never thought I’d get to try one of these as they are super rare (and stupid expensive). Old vines, actually, as this was the original vineyard Randy planted back in the ‘70s. Sadly, ‘13 was the last vintage of this as it was replanted. It’s undoubtedly Dunn in its power and structure with an added sweet, velvet mid palate and finish. Charcoal/smoke, roasted blue and black fruit, and clove. Finish is just a mind-blowing evolution of potpourri, baked berry pie and savory notes. Deserves a table to its own and a few more years to grow up to its potential. Awesome stuff

Approachable red blend. To me, this is the pop and pour wine out of the lineup. Very plush. This reminds me of Flora Springs Trilogy Blend out of Napa with a bit more fruit on the finish. More milk chocolate than dark. Boysenberry, blue and black fruit medley.

A cab that wants to be a syrah. Black fruit dominant front, some weediness in the middle, but then rounds out rather nicely on the finish. Has a lot of black pepper on the end. Still showing some tannin here, and even a little bit of heat on the finish. I respectfully disagree with the 94.6 average on CT, as IMO this wine is a bit too unidimensional, but perhaps it is just because it's young. It echoes a previous experience I had with this wine a few years ago.

Renato Motalli

Le Urscele Valtellina Superiore Nebbiolo 2018

At first open, this on the nose has a distinct caramel/barrel(botti?),odor that my wife also noted as unique. ( we’ll try to remember exactly) Then i plopped it out for 2 plus hours and with lots of air, this bloomed into a savory, brownish leaning with red underpinnings Barolo cousin. Lighter indeed, but many of the same fruit and secondary notes are there. The tannins are very gentle, and with a meal lighter in heavy proteins it fits well. We had Tortilla Espanola,,Sardines, cheeses, veggies.
There’s something almost brandyesque here…teasing at it but rewarding, especially on the nose that sense of rusty red coming up from below.
Motalli is always very interesting, I’d like more acidity, but that’s trifling.

Clos Martinet

Priorat Grenache Blend 2020

From the insane clearance sales of the @plcb, comes this wine for $25. Often you have to tell them what they have in stock, or say…” could you please check in the back?”. Then out comes a sealed wooden, 6 btl case. ( in one instance.). If you’re lucky to hear of the clearance sales, and there’s some things you care for near you it can be great. One just 🤞then prays that the provenance was good.
The 2020 vintage in Priorat was a challenge from what I understand. Wet, with fungus and rot, etc.
The ordinarily Garnacha heavy blend was swapped for 55% Syrah, 34% Garnacha, some Cab. and others. A quite unusual winemaking regiment ensues with large tronchons, cement, and glass demijohns included.
So…this upside down year produced a very lithe, liquorice and mineral wine. Dusky dark fruit on the nose more reminiscent of St. Emillion. Grippy tannins but in harmony. Easy going for Priorat. If you’re lucky to have them, drink or hold ‘em. I feel lucky to have played my part and relieved the @plcb of their burden.

This wine is made by John Duvall of Penfolds. Dark overripe berries, smoke, cassis, currant and some smoked bacon. Not the northern Rhône/Cayuse like funky Syrahs...this is more Napa Syrah that is rich, structured and voluptuous. Notes of violets and caramel. One of my favorites of the night.
