Rosso de Véo Umbria Rosso Sagrantino 2015

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of a couple hours. The 2015 pours a deep ruby/purple color with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with fairly significant staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe black and red fruits: black cherry, mixed bramble berries, spices, horse blanket, espresso…powerful. On the palate, the wine is dry with high tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and wild. Whoa, the structure is significant. Drink now and through 2040. Santa Chiara Umbria Bianco Malvasia Blend 2019

Pours a copper-gold color that will immediately make you wonder if this has been oxidized, but apparently that's the style. Like their reds, they seem to turn everything up to 11 in Montefalco.

After decanting in the glass, aromas of toffee, white flowers, almonds, bitter oranges, and minerals. Very funky and interesting, but not something I'd hand innocent wine drinkers.

Lapideus Umbria Bianco Trebbiano 2019

Opened and decanted shortly before dinner; enjoyed over the course of two hours. The 2019 pours a very rustic looking, deep straw bordering gold color; medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is developing with lovely notes bruised and dried fruits: dried apricot, bruised yellow apple, candied oranges, yellow flowers, herbaceous (rosemary?), and old wood. And yet there’s a freshness there that is undeniable. On the palate, the wine is dry with low tannin and medium + acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is very long. Another vintage of Lapideus and another beauty from Giampiero. These wines make me think and each time I get to enjoy one, I’m reminded of why wine can be so special. Drink now through 2029. Bricco Ambrogio Barolo Nebbiolo 2020

“Bricco Ambrogio” stands alone as the only MGA in the tiny commune of Roddi and it’s almost completely under vine. In fact, the most prominent geological feature in Roddi is the hill of Bricco Ambrogio. While the Lodali family were the first to bottle a single expression, back in the late 1970’s, we largely have Paolo Scavino to thank for the growth of its reputation as a source of depth and balanced Barolo over the last 20+ years.

The 2020 “Bricco Ambrogio” pours a bright, luminous garnet color; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing and predominately red fruited with notes of Morello cherry, cranberry, raspberry, rosebushes, tar, dried green herbs, cedar chest, spices, and gravely earth. On the palate, the wine is bone dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finishes long, grippy and spicy. A lovely Bricco Ambrogio with beautiful balance and sneaky power; arguably the benchmark for the MGA. Drinking well now in its youth (thank you 2020) but will surely gain complexity after 2030 and deliver smiles through 2040+.

Rocche dell'Annunziata Riserva Barolo Nebbiolo 2010

Classic Barolo via the stellar 2010 vintage (now +15 yrs). Medium / pale garnet and pours to a transparent center. Pop-and-pour to taste, with a much needed 2-hour decant to follow. Bone dry, high tannin and medium+ acidity, just like I like it. Tons of dark red fruit; this is drinking exceptionally well now, but would certainly benefit from 10-15+ more years in the cellar as the nose continues to develop. The finish is long / strong and heavily structured; simply a gorgeous expression of the Rocche dell’Annunziata Riserva! — 4 months ago

Enrico Scavino Barolo Nebbiolo 2018

Medium Ruby with aromas of red fruits, floral and new leather notes, fruit sources from several vineyard sites. On the palate flavors of cherry and plum fruits with tobacco and pepper spice. Firm chewy tannins, savory on a medium+ finish ending with notes of oak, mineral and earthy character. Drinking well now, good value. — 7 months ago
