More like a spiced herbal tea than wine in the glass, the 2020 Il Frappato wafts up with a smoky mix of dusty rose, sage, allspice and crushed ashen stone. This is pure and delicate in feel, with a salty flourish up front that gives way to citrus-tinged wild berries and red plums. It leaves the palate completely refreshed, tapering off with a staining of liquid inner florals and licorice nuances. While I don’t see the 2020 making old bones, it would benefit from a short stay in the cellar to help unlock more of its aromatic profile. It’s an understated beauty. Very reticent nose. Majestic tannins. Layer upon layer of fruit, spice, meat, minerals. Dense and demanding. Pure and profound. A unicorn that deserves its wings. — 5 years ago
Rich amber color. Luscious red fruits, licorice, honey, and cardamom in the nose. Deeper flavors on the palate, with very rich mouthfeel and hints of light smoke. Luxurious finish. Nice to be tasting some Japanese whisky again after a dry spell in California! — 6 years ago
Enjoyed this more than my first bottle a few months ago. Has settled down a bit. Quaffable, bright tart red fruit. Again was better on day 2. Not "pure" bottling — 7 years ago

Gorgeous tonight! Incredibly vibrant and fresh for the warm vintage. It’s so elegant and detailed with a captivating bouquet of wilted roses, red cherries, smoky herbs and mushrooms and the palate is delicate, pure and long with incisive acids, lift and layered minerality. Fantastic. — 7 months ago
A slightly stinky front. Then real deep clarity of raspberry fruit. There’s a gentle luscious center of hauntingly pure aged fruit (dried roses, soft cherry?) leading into the end palate. Really lucid. Delicious. — 4 years ago
