Château Rayas

Réservé Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grenache Blend 2005

I’ve been fortunate to consume several bottles of this legend. However, this was the first bottle that did not have me babbling to my dinner guests. All the Rayas traits; elegance , pure fruit , spice were present just not oversized. — 10 months ago

Domaine Roulot

Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2014

After drinking the ‘15 last week it seemed logical to revisit the ‘14. A whiff of reduction that mixes well with the apple and citrus scents . Beautifully handled oak that never intrudes on the wonderful pure fruit flavors.

@Ira Schwartz how do you feel about the increasing cost of the Bourgogne? Great wine nonetheless.

@Alex Jones I have come to expect these things. Instead of purchasing 6-12 bottles annually I now buy 2-3 bottles. On the positive side it forces me to find a lower cost (hopefully not a lower quality ) producer.

Nikka Whisky Distilling Company

21 Years Old Pure Malt Whisky

Rich amber color. Luscious red fruits, licorice, honey, and cardamom in the nose. Deeper flavors on the palate, with very rich mouthfeel and hints of light smoke. Luxurious finish. Nice to be tasting some Japanese whisky again after a dry spell in California! — 8 years ago

Domaine Prieuré Roch

Pure Bourgogne Gamay 2015

Enjoyed this more than my first bottle a few months ago. Has settled down a bit. Quaffable, bright tart red fruit. Again was better on day 2. Not "pure" bottling — 9 years ago

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 1949

Roses and dark brambles. Quite intense and very pure. Whiffs of tobacco and a real purity of fruit. Little tang of acidity on the finish with dried orange rind. Still profound — 2 years ago

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC)

La Tâche Pinot Noir 1950

A slightly stinky front. Then real deep clarity of raspberry fruit. There’s a gentle luscious center of hauntingly pure aged fruit (dried roses, soft cherry?) leading into the end palate. Really lucid. Delicious. — 6 years ago

La Mouline Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2001

Initially tightly wound and pretty slow to get going, but it makes a big change after a sufficient decant and begins to show what La Mouline is all about. Pure class and elegance with seductive and complex aromatics of red berry fruit, bacon fat, campfire smoke and fresh violets. The palate is expansive with killer intensity, a velvety texture and a long and vibrant finish. Last sips were the best. This is still young. — 4 years ago

Château Léoville-Las Cases

Grand Vin de Leoville du Marquis de las Cases Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1928

A standout for me, complex, tannic and pure. Dried red fruit and rose petals that lifted. Acidity was showing strong in the life blood of this wine. Easily another 20 years. For sure a hundred year wine. — 7 years ago

There were two bottles here, both in very different condition. The more advanced one was beautifully soft and developed/ the fresher bottle still needed time. A lovely wine in both cases

Domaine Jamet

Côte-Rôtie Syrah 1988

From the wine list at EMP bought by a new friend at the table next to us to go mano a mano against the 88 La Turque I shared. Slightly darker red and more pure in color. Amazing aroma that is more linear than the animalistic La La but in the same league. Hit its stride right out of the pop and pour gate. Lovely perfume with a more briary nose but speaks Cote Rotie from the get go. Perfectly integrated fruit and structure. Best Jamet I've had. Thanks to Danny for this treat. — 9 years ago
