Summa Old Vines Pinot Noir 2016

Consistently my favorite RM Pinot, this was the last of my 2016s…no restraint! No surprise, it showed the most layers but also the most in reserve for evolving down the road. For those who still have, I’d hold another 2-3yrs, or decant 2+hrs.

This was opened later in the evening alongside other wines, but at least was given a decant for about an hour before it was mostly consumed. Out of the 2016 single vineyard Pinots I’ve consumed, the easy answer is it’s mostly similar to the Summa, but just because that’s the easy answer doesn’t mean it’s the wrong one. The similarities with the black tea, pomegranate, mint, and muddled underripe raspberries are obvious but where it diverges from the Summa is with the blood orange…the citrus layers here are absolutely fantastic. A great combo of fruit and savory notes (doesn’t seem to have much whole cluster), with nervy acidity and a lengthy finish. This is just beginning to unfurl.

I still have all my Summa Old Vines back to 2013. I’ll definitely hold my 2016 for a few more years!

Sonoma County "Old Vines" Zinfandel 2019

Wow. What a mouthful. This is not for the faint of heart. Not too fruity and quite tart, this Zin packs a punch. Dark cherries with a hint of oak. It finishes strong with some grippy tannins. — 2 months ago

Great nose of fresh raspberries. Muddled, carbonic. Good acidity on the palate, but the fruit didn’t follow through. Awesome reference. — 2 months ago
