Eye Candy

Aubert

UV Vineyard Pinot Noir 2010

Shay A
9.5

This run of about 13 PHENOMENAL wines I'm posting are from the SQN wine dinner/WNH interview I did at @Shawn R 's house last night. I was like a kid in a candy store on Christmas. What an absolutely EPIC night! Love ya brother!

What kind of world do we live in where we use THIS as a palate cleanser?! Haha. So insane. I'm late to the Aubert train but this was actually my first Pinot from them (love their chards). Big cherry cola aroma, red licorice and graphite on the nose too. Excellent acidity and a finish of tart cherry and blackberries.

We'll done for the style: big, bold, deep. Varietal, dark, touch of lavender, coffee candy. A little hot on the finish. — 10 years ago

D'Oliveiras

Vintage Madeira Terrantez 1977

Gorgeously saline, an initial plasticine aroma blows off to reveal orange blossom, roasted pecan, citrus peel, maple candy. Vicious acidity marries will with off-dryness but the acid carries the day. Finish lasts a solid minute. I love this as much as I hate port. — 8 years ago

This was the Madeira that sent me down the rabbit hole of Madeira. Hell yeah.

Château Lynch-Bages

Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1989

1989 Lynch Bages is drinking great! Paired with 1993 Pichon LaLande at Christmas dinner. Rich, full robust aromas and fruit flavors. Plums and cedar in the nose. Aging gracefully with plenty of life ahead. Good acidity and slightly drying finish. Very nice wine with eye of the round beef dinner. — 9 years ago

Château d'Yquem

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend

9.1

1990: Corked, unfortunately. My mom had the best line, "It sure tastes better than it smells!" I recall what it was like on release, hard candy sweetness with a surprisingly light framework, particularly compared to both the '88 & '89 on release, and the crazy depth of the'90 Ch. Filholt Creme de tete, which was massively concentrated. This bottle still had oomph, yet wasn't all there. — 10 years ago

Barbaresco Nebbiolo

Barbaresco albeisa 2010

This Nebbiolo has a very light smokey aroma, with bright red current, cherry jolly rancher candy, porcini mushroom and black licorice.
Firm tannins and really nice acidity.

Could use another 5 year in the bottle.

I really enjoyed this wine!

Not a bad wine, it was pretty good — 11 years ago

Marcel Lapierre

Morgon Gamay 2015

Big fruit liqueur upon opening, settling into a lighter berry candy nose. Transforming flavors pull in many strong directions, but never last long enough to knock it out of round. Sweet and sour, earthy and floral. Opens up to an easy-drinking, versatile, pour-at-your-own-risk, pairing machine. With: brie, tarragon mustard, baguette, castelvetranos, and cured meats.
Edit: Finding chalk toward the end of the bottle... Also, sadness for not having another to open.

Roero Nebbiolo 2013

Diverse #wine. #Nebbiolo from #Roero. Closed, cloudy and smelling of robust cherries, and bacon fat, oil. Opened up to soft pink flowers, candy apple shell, wet soil. Color is slightly cloudy as unfiltered, bright red throughout from edge to edge. Everything opened over an hour. Flavors of soft strawberry, marachino cherry, candy apple, sweet/sour sauce, smooth. Tannins never explode, but stay moderate, harmonious with acidity. Opened 1/22/17 — 8 years ago

Deep purple coloration. Cassis and a sweet, candy like cherry nose. On the palate a nice body, caramel, cherry, and a long finish on the 2008. The sweetness is balanced nice with tannins. — 10 years ago
