Chateau La Mission Haut Brion 1989 - Decanted 4.5 hours prior to drinking but with stopper affixed to the decanter. From Jay. Stopper was pulled from the decanter 30 minutes prior to pouring. This bottle was part of a case of 12 that went ex. Chateau seven years ago and has been professionally stored ever since. Inky purple in colour. Strong black fruits on the nose. Blackberries, Cherries, and blueberries all interwoven in a thick, lush, and seamless manner. Elements of wet tobacco are also present. The attack is strong but the mid palate is huge with incredible fruit levels. This a big full bodied Claret in every sense of the word yet in no way is it lacking in balance - a true multidimensional wine. To belabour the point, there is no over extraction here. From its colour all the way to the massive finish this wine makes no apologies for its masculinity and sheer presence. It's a hyper refined slugger! There will be decades of life left in well stored bottles of this wine but it's approachable now given sufficient air. Drink now to 2040 and probably beyond. 98/100.

The 2016 Syrah is a very pretty wine from Greg Brewer's Ex Post Facto project. Racy and perfumed in the glass, with striking aromatic presence, the 2016 makes a strong opening statement. The red and purplish berry fruit is nicely lifted by floral and savory overtones from the whole clusters. It will be interesting to see where this wine goes in the future. Certainly the debut vintage is promising. Brewer gave the fruit, from Spear, 4-5 days of cold soak followed by a lengthy fermentation/maceration of 45 days or so. The 2016 spent 16 months in neutral French oak. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, September 2018) — 8 years ago

First of two magnums, ex chateau... for €31. This is a cru bourgeois, which I respect more after having visited and learned more about the classifications. I'm usually worried about older wines collapsing that I don't often decant, although I find myself saying "I'm surprised how it opened up after an hour" enough that I might reconsider. This was one of those. Perhaps the most interesting thing about this wine was how the fruit hits you on the finish instead of at the beginning. Nice, mature, restrained left bank Bordeaux.
