Les Forêts Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2019

Shy nose, but very pure and authentic Chablis. Steely, razor sharp citrus, salty mineral. Long. Very pure expression. — 2 years ago

Vieilles Vignes Chablis Chardonnay 2015

Popped and poured. This is the 2015 Vieilles Vignes. Courtesy of Good Life Provisions. Super pale straw color. Fresh sliced apples, honeysuckle. Racy. Persistent minerality but plenty of fruit to make this a lovely brunch wine with salmon and Jarlsberg. — 6 years ago

Montée de Tonnerre Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2015

Popped and poured; presented double-blind. The wine presents a pale straw color with a silver rim. Medium viscosity. No signs of particle or gas. On the nose, the wine expresses notes of pineapple, apricot, yellow flowers, and what I detected as ferrous minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry and elevated acidity; what I would place as medium+. Confirmed the pineapple and stone fruits which are accompanied by some lemon citrus and the aforementioned minerals. There’s a good core of fruit but the structure is hard to place in the New World so I’m in France, Burgundy, Chablis…from a quality producer…village level. Turns out…I was close. And I gotta be honest, I almost called 1er but I couldn’t easily pick out the oak treatment until I had an empty glass and there it was. Oh well…learning. Regardless, a lovely example from a warm vintage.

Les Blanchots Vieilles Vignes Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 2011

9.0

Three Grand Cru's BOOM! Just buy the one at the top! When you're talking $120 for the cheapest and $140 for the most expensive you may as well! The Blanchots steps it up a notch and punches above it's $ weight compared to the other two GC's. Poise, seamless integration with deceptively powerful lingering fruit separate it from the others. The Vaudésir is perhaps the most different in style of all the wines. Much fuller and rounder with a hint of overt oak, not in a bad way. Similar to the difference between Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligy-Montrachet. Ageing potential of Chablis is insane. When I was working at Yarra Yering on the naughties we were buying 1970's GC Chablis by Testut & Frére by the wheelbarrow for less than a price of couple of bottles of Yellow Tail. Hoovered it all now, insanely delicious as 30 year old wine. The lower alcohol, fresher, acid driven styles of Chardonnay being made in Australia today make it a much smaller leap to the wines of Chablis. One worth experimenting with!
