Deep gold in color. Apricot cobbler, ginger, ripe peach, and petrol on the nose. The palate presents apricot liquor, flint, orange liqueur, white pepper, ginger, cinnamon, clove, dried stone fruit, and lemon. Medium bodied, medium alcohol, medium acid, and a long complex finish. Dried dirt and a touch of mushroom jump out of the glass immediately. Pomegranate and mulled cranberry with a bit of barnyard and potpourri. The tannins are still there, but acidity is more present. The tartness from the red fruit comes through on the palate with dried dirt, tree bark, and umami. This is definitely mid-morph. Maybe 3 more years would benefit this wine greatly. Warm vintage cru Beaujolais sourced from a tiny plot in the Côte du Py vineyard. There’s a lot to be said about the fruit-forward spiciness, but for me the nuances are flattened by a richness I associate with a higher ABV - the wines that are coming to mind are Williams Selyem’s pinots rather than a Beaujolais or Burgundy. Not really for me but a worthwhile avenue to explore if you want to try a different, relatively subtler version of a big red. — 5 years ago
