this one surprised me--would never ever give a second thought to Italian Syrah, but this was elegant and harmonious and damn fine all around. — 9 years ago

Château Lafite Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1961

Fake wine. Cork said 1967. Came from a case that had others that had corks with 1964 on them that were shaved off. This was a wine that was doctored by the famous Rudy Kurniwan, now in jail. — 10 years ago

I think the 95 we had was a fake as well. Probably not a Rudy (too young) but very suspect.

Had it been re-corked (to allow numbers to be shaved off) or just re-labelled? If the former, do you think the contents were the '67 or something else?

Altovinum

Evodia Garnacha

This is bold and flavorful! It is so good. I'd totally buy a case of this. It drinks at a $32 bottle level. — 10 years ago

Château Léoville Barton

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

This is rated from tasting earlier this year in Chicago at the UGCB event. I will review later today after we open this evening. I usually purchase in case lots, 12 or 6 whichever is available along with an additional bottle for immediate consumption. This practice has always worked for me. It's a great opportunity to establish a base tasting profile right out the gate..................As usual, textbook. Big, but not bruising. A pleasure to drink now, and as it matures. A fresh and supple example of great wine making, terroir and pedigree. Well integrated and delicious. — 8 years ago

Case Sleepy Hollow Vineyard Pinot Noir 1999

Not as good as the 98 but still pretty enjoyable showing lots of the qualities of an older mature wine with ripe tanins and mature fruit - good bit of richness for a Pinot — 9 years ago

An oddity for me, strange at first until a stink blew off. But what emerged was neat, very different, young Nebbiolo on steroids. — 11 years ago

Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Wow. I had a glass of this and could still taste it two hours later (not always a good thing but in this case it was). Taste like a hike on Mount Veeder. — 9 years ago

Château Latour

Premier Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1962

Another level... Still dense at the core, with steady, attractive bricking: Wonderfully dense nose of blackcurrents, pencil shavings, fine tanned leather, and a hint of woodland floor (fine moss, leaves, and fresh soil after an autumn shower). Velvety tannins and great acidity. Along with the '66 this is one of my all-time favourite Bordeaux vintages. Seems to be keeping up better than the '61s I've had over the last few years!

We drank half of it from the coravin before waxing the top in case the cork had lost too much elasticity to self-seal. I'll have the rest with my brother in a few weeks' time!

Waxing the top? Candle / flame... Simple and self explanatory?

Actually, I use bottle wax, melted in a spoon over a lighter. May be a little associative of the heroin ritual but it's very effective!

Morgon Gamay 2013

Great subtle gamay. I've always loved this wine (produced organically with no added yeast). I first tried this wine around 1992. Loved it then (bought a case) and it's still great today. This family knows what's it's doing with this wine. — 10 years ago

Paloma

Napa Valley Merlot 1997

The last bottle of a case bought on release. Fragrant nose of wood smoke and spice. Big bold dark fruit, some oak, resolved tannin and only a hint of alcohol.
Definitely the most lively of my last few bottles, could go another 3+ years.
