Very dark in colour - opaque. Black plum and earthy “Heathcote “ aromas - some spice and liquorice. The same notes carry through to the full bodied palate with dark cherry and mocha. Chalky dry tannins. From magnum. — 3 years ago
My kind of #californication 🙂 Deep and spicy (finish) with strong bitter chocolate. Mild tannins, medium acidity. Black fruits - barely palpable. But a leather, smoke maybe - they do the job. My second wine from William Hill - the first one was fantastic blend (2014). — 5 years ago
As a long time lover of Pax Wines. These have changed with age. Once a powerhouse, it’s become more sublime. Aged Syrah is awesome, just different. Dry and elegant, with a dark fruit on the nose, the palate reveals blackberry and spicy and lots of black pepper. Rich mouthfeel and medium acidity. It’s all still there, but on it’s last leg. Still so good @Pax Mahle — 6 years ago
Bold and an explosion of flavor that I wasn’t expecting. Really would be wonderful with a steak dinner. Full body with hints of blackberry and black pepper . I’m enjoying this and would buy again. — 7 years ago
Dark ruby in color with a purplish rim.
Great fruity nose with black currants, blackberries, figs, cooked cherries, smoke, licorice, cedar, vanilla, alcohol, spices, cinnamon, chocolates, coffee, peppercorn and licorice.
Full bodied and big, yet smooth, with medium acidity and long legs.
Dry and fruity on the palate with blackberries, sweet plums, cherry pie, dried figs, tobacco, spices, wood, herbs, earth, leather and peppercorn.
Long finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries.
This is a great Napa Bordeaux blend. Well balanced and enjoyable by itself or with food. Showing good complexity with a great mouthfeel.
The tangy finish makes it interesting, with a teeth staining color.
This 3 year old is drinking very nicely now. Good right out of the bottle and better as it opens up (one hour).
Rich and extracted. Delightful and delicious.
I paired it with a big piece of steak and grilled asparagus.
15% alcohol by volume.

2010 vintage. Deep ruby hue. Amazing nose of white pepper, Chinese spice, black fruits and cocoa beans. Complex despite its youth. On the palate, medium acidity, medium plus body and alcohol, medium ripe silky tannins, full concentration and long finish. Extremely promising. Drink 2022 until 2040. — 9 years ago
It's time for some Merlot on this MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back!
Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.
Medium plus in body with medium acidity.
Dry on the palate with nice complexity.
Showing black fruits with light wood, spices, coffee, dark chocolates, earth, tobacco leaf, light black pepper, herbs, light vanilla and licorice.
Tangy finish with soft tannins.
This 5-year-old Merlot from Napa Valley is peaking now, and drinking very nicely. Fruit forward with an elegant mouthfeel.
Wine Spectator 91 points.
Good by itself as a sipping wine, and good for parties. Good with food too.
A blend of 77% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Syrah. Aged in French oak barrels for 18 months.
14.5% alcohol by volume.

Outstanding, and still young, easily will improve over the next few years. On par with favorite Martinellis and Turleys, though lower alcohol and not quite as big. Still plenty of complexity and rich black fruits. — 4 years ago
Medium color and acidity. Somewhat Closed. Black Raspberry, graphite, herbs like bay leaf and chocolate. Firm tannins — 5 years ago
Clean fresh black fruit. Ink at the end. Smooth. Dry fruit in the scent but not in taste. Light for cab but full of flavor. — 6 years ago
Riverain is Steve Nordhoff and Dean & Laurie Gray’s label that produces just a few hundred cases from some select vineyards in Northern California, including a Tench Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Gamble Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc.
According to Dean Gray, Riverain is a historically French term meaning “local & friendly people who reside near the river.” @Greg Ballington deserves credit for the reco, and while I’ve had a handful of Syrahs from the Cardiac Hill Vineyard in Sonoma County’s Bennett Valley, this is my first that’s made by Thomas Rivers Brown.
Screams old world, particularly Northern Rhône. Loved it from the get-go, but the acceleration at 90 minutes open is significant. Campfire grilled meat, finely ground pepper, black olive, and creosote, with a core of savory black fruit, and a beautiful secondary combination of cedar and lavender. There’s a distinctive combination of balance, purity of fruit, and savory structure that’s hard not to recognize. — 8 years ago
Absolutely stunning.. Titus, you dog! Yummm! Congrats on your engagement! I wish you a happy journey ahead! Cheers! — 9 years ago
Mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Merlot and Malbec blended in. Dark ruby color. Aromas of cooked black cherries and blueberries. The palate offers a blend of jammy red, blue and blackberry fruit along with notes of mint, baking spices, coffee and orange zest. Medium-plus body and well balanced. Not overly powerful or rich but pretty harmonious. Velvety tannins. I think I enjoyed this one more than you did, Keith S! — 2 years ago
Black plum and sour cherry, medium tannin and good acidity, medium length. Great value from Australia. — 4 years ago
09’ Edge Hill Abel 1833 Mount Veeder. Ruby red in color with a slight purpleish rim. Unlike the O’shaughnesy this wine is close to a PNP. Dark black fruits, tobacco, mint, herbs. The acidity is still apparent 4/10 The tannins have all but melted away in this cab/blend? Has become quite beautiful/seamless. Don’t see this getting any better. Drink them up in the next 5 - 10 years. — 5 years ago
These Red Rose Hill Cabs are so interesting. The older (20 year plus) vintages are beautiful and complex. Later vintages are tangy and fruity tasting more like Pinot Noir than Cabs. This 2008 seems to be transitioning from the latter to the former. Nose is barnyard funk and mulled fruit. There is still some tangy cranberry on the palate, but there is also tobacco, black tea and leather. It loses a little body post middle, but the finish is smokey, chewy and sizzles. This is headed in a Bordeaux direction, and is not a big alcohol California red (12.8%). I️ doubt this wine will hit the perfection of the early 90 vintages, but I’d sure like to try it 10 years from now to see if it ends up there. — 9 years ago
Lovely balance, acid and power. Black olives, cocoa and some coffee along with black cherry. — 9 years ago

Luscious tannins, smooth body. Now was the time to drink the 2015 vintage….it couldn’t wait any longer. Intense black fruit, plum and spice on the palette. A delicious BC Bordeaux blend. Reminiscent of a Napa Cab. — 8 months ago
