Preta Vinho Regional Alentejano Touriga Nacional Blend 2021

2021 vintage. Note that there is no Touriga Nacional in this wine, it is a blend of 40% Aragonêz, 30% Alicante Bouschet, 20% Trincadeira and 10% Castelão. Fitapreta was the project of young winemaker António Maçanita and the late consultant David Booth ( who sadly died from a heart attack at age 47 in 2012). Maçanita favours minimal intervention, indigenous yeasts and low sulfites. Terrific value, bursting with fruit and spices with a ripe tannic backbone. Aged 50% in stainless steel and 50% in neutral barrels. Abv. 14,5%. — 3 years ago

Shortridge Lawton

Madeira Boal 1861

Back in February I went along to a Madeira tasting hosted by The Food & Wine Society, New York. Entitled Two Centuries of Boal, the wines were from the cellar of Andrew Jones, who is quite the authority when it comes to Madeira.

We kicked off with the 1861 Boal from Shortridge Lawton & Co (which became part of the Madeira Wine Association). With Madeira, the key thing is how long it aged in barrel. Once it is in the bottle, the aging stops. So had the 1861 been bottled in 1871, it would still be a 10 year old Madiera. This wasn't the case here. Instead Jones tracked its bottling to sometime after 1965.

Such long aging did well for this wine. While 1861 was considered a poor vintage at the time, this Madeira was stunning:

Brown with yellow rims. Rich on the nose with caramel and raisins. Incredible richness on the palate, with an intense burst that sustains. Faded sweetness with dried fruits and sandalwood, and especially dry on the finish, that seems to go on forever with evolving complexity. Gorgeous. A beyond rare treat.

Branco de Talha Regional Alentejano 2010

2020 vintage. A blend of 70% Roupeiro and 30% Antão Vaz, vinified together in amphora by winemakers António Maçanita and Sandra Sárria. Unlike stated by one comment here, this is not oxidative whatsoever. Pear, quince, flowers and a hint of fresh mint. Medium-bodied with juicy white fruit, tight acidity, fresh herbs and very good mineral length. Abv. 12,5%. — 3 years ago

Very cool and unique wine, nice to try it again. Pears, lemons, oyster shell, crushed rocks on the nose. Beautiful salinity on the palate. A little short and one dimensional but great@expression of terroir. reminds me of a Chablis. — 4 years ago

Azores Wine Co.

António Macanita Arinto dos Açores

Volcanic Verdelho do Pico (different from the Portuguese mainland Verdelho, also known as Godello in Spain) from vineyards located on 3 different islands - Pico, Graciosa and S. Miguel- in the Azores archipelago. Virtually at sea level and unusually close to the Ocean, vines grow on very poor volcanic basalt soils, surrounded by traditional stone-walled “currais” to protect them from the extreme Atlantic winds. Salty and mineral. Thirst-quenching acidity. Passion fruit. 🌋 🌋 — 7 years ago
