Tenuta dell'Ornellaia

Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri Rosso Merlot Blend 2003

Lots of promise here even at 17 years of age. Still tight upon decanting but good mouthfeel and the fruit is very much present. The tannins have certainly subsided but the acidity is still quite high. I suspect a couple of hours from now it will have settled down considerably. Certainly a special wine. — 6 years ago

Penfolds

Bin 389 South Australia Cabernet Shiraz 2002

See many previous notes. Holding up comfortably from this excellent cooler vintage . 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Shiraz. I am lucky to have 6 bottles left from back in the day when I bought 2 dozen. Definitely drinking on the plateau and will carry on for a while yet. Medium weight palate but with great length and persistence. Will probably consume the rest over the next 3 to 4 years. Penfolds 2020 collection (17 wines)just released in Australia. The 2018 Bin 389 received 96 points from Halliday. The 2016 Grange is being talked about as one of the greats - 99 points from Halliday. — 6 years ago

This used to be a stable for me, Bob. I prefer the 407, 707 and RWT. But, I agree, this is good blend from Penfolds.

Daou Vineyards

Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

In hills of Paso Robles, not far from Hearst castle, there is a man with a Homeric vision. His name is Daniel Daou and he is devoting his life to creating outstanding Cabernet’s. Deep red with dark berry nose, aged for 11 months on French oak (60% new). On the palate blackberry, black cherry and licorice, pepper spice with savory fine tannins. Medium+ finish ending with cacao and earthy herbs. Great value. The ‘17 is a bit richer than ‘16. Tasting Sample. — 7 years ago

Aconcagua Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2014

#dfwe2018 — 7 years ago

Drank 10/19/17. Tasting pour.

Nose of black fruits, violets, and cocoa. Plums and black currant on the palate, still with tannins that are quite firm. Long finish. Drink now or age another 5-10 years.

Deg late 17, drink beside initial, and thogh deg 6 mounths earlier still a little more closed. But the VO shows a Deeper conplexity and lenght. Beautiful, probably so so good in 3 years. Slightly higher rated than initial due to potential. — 6 years ago

A step up in complexity compared next to Initial. Opens up slowly but surely with a couple of hours of air. Crazy amount of hazelnut on the nose. Found it very fascinating to smell and sip on.

Wines of Substance, LLC

Cs Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Dark ruby in color with a short purple rim.

Fruity nose of blackberries, sweet cherries, oak, vanilla, licorice, cloves, herbs, spices, dark chocolates, coffee, peppercorn, earth and pencil lead.

Full bodied with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry and fruity on the palate with blackberries, black cherries, raisins, vanilla, oak, licorice, spices, chocolates, tobacco, mocha, coke, earth, light vegetables, pencil lead and peppercorn.

Nice length on the finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries.

This Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon is always enjoyable. Drinking nicely now as a 3 years old.

Fruit forward with nice balance. Showing mild complexity with a nice mouthfeel.

Wine Enthusiasts 90 points.

Good right out of the bottle and better as it opens up and shows the tannins (45 minutes).

Nice enough to drink by itself, but pairs nicely with food too.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

89 points.

De Toren

Book 17 XVII Red Bordeaux Blend 2013

Greg Ballington
9.3

Day five on the cruise and this night at Giovanni's Table, the Italian restaurant, aboard the Allure of the Seas. We decided to open up two South African beauties for this.

Deep ruby red with a slight garnet hue on the edges. Layered nose with dark cocoa, floral notes, dark berries and spices. Some classic 'South African' chalk as well. Medium plus tannins (6.5/10) and medium plus to full bodied. Dusty dark black cherries on the attack with some black currants, dark spices, a touch earthy, vanilla and some nutmeg. Seems quite restrained and reserved but well integrated as well. Dry and long finish. Drink till 2037.

Third time trying this limited bottling by De Toren Private Cellars with only 1,132 bottles produced in the 2013 vintage. This wine is made through the use of extreme winemaking techniques such as extreme cropping, extensive hand sorting, 200% new French oak for a total of 18 months and unfiltered. You are probably wondering how it can be 200%? This is done by aging the wine in 100% new French oak barrels for twelve months before transferring them to another set of 100% new French oak barrels for six additional months.
