Reserve Vermentino 2023

This wine looks yellow-gold with a greenish tint to it. The nose is quite aromatic, displaying a floral note along with massive citrus minerality. The palate has lemon, lime and grapefruit flavors joined by a wonderful salinity. The acidity is very fresh, but the mouthfeel has, overall, a rather soft touch. It’s great to find a Vermentino of this quality that’s made in America. Virginia is for Vermentino lovers, I suppose. — 7 months ago

Meritage Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

One of finest vintage yrs for this estate, as evidenced by the OPULENTLY RICH PV component. Jeffersons terroir and taste of place are evident in this bottle… Think somewhere in between Paso Robles Cab and Rhône GSM. - very unique finish. Delish and a real value! $28 at Wegs — 4 years ago

Brut Blanc de Blanc Sparkling Blend 2009

Let’s leave the politics out of this. Very solid Sparkler. Great vintage made with excellent Chardonnay grapes. Green apple, pear, with a bit of lemon. A hint of sourdough bread. Creamy texture and very effervescent. — 6 years ago

Octagon Red Bordeaux Blend 2017

This wine is very dark. It has a fragrant nose, full of blue and black fruit, flowers, cedar, green pepper, and an underlying earthiness. The palate is fruity and rich, with blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries. There is a bright acidity matched with gentle tannins. The finish is medium long and carries the fruit as a lasting memory. — 7 months ago

Early Mountain

Eluvium Red Blend 2019

Layer and poised…longer than normal, high acid finish. Currently fresh crunchy red (raspberry, blackberries) energetically form a velvety liquor. Long term, 6-8 year will be super balanced. Strong enough to hold up to burgers on night one and pot roast and mashed potatoes on day two… This is clearly the best Eluvium that Ben has made. Markedly better than 17, this one should be stocked up on to drink one a year for the next 10 — 4 years ago

Fabbioli Cellars

Tannat 2012

Red berry, humid summer forest, hints of old leather jacket and hard candies on the nose. Plum, raspberry, tart cherry, notes of vanilla, soft puckering tannins lingering with juicy cranberry on the finish. Nice red for Virginia. Went well with pizza. — 5 years ago

Carter's Mountain Vineyard Cabernet Franc 2019

Among the Top 5 annually BEST CF’s in the old dominion. Rich but not over bearing or over-extracted. Fresh and energetic acid carry thru to the mid-palate, while enough wood tannin cleans up for the long red fruited jet stream. Ready for any culinary challenge, yet so sophisticated it can be sipped with marvel! — 3 years ago

Glen Manor Vineyards

Hodder Hill Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2014

So not much has changed in 3 yrs since first trying this in the tasting room. The profile is lean and linear. 69 CS 16 Merlot and the rest PV. This clearly the weakest build of Jeff’s run of left bank builds. The 2014 was classic, so not huge numbers for the CS. THE TEXTURE IS LOVELY though. ;) 90+ for sure, keeping the streak ALIVE!! — 4 years ago

Petit Manseng 2016

2016 tasted 1/2019. Rich golden yellow. Beautiful floral and honeyed yellow apple aromas. Full bodied with palate of ripe apple and a nice thread of acidity. Very pleasant. Virginia should be growing less Viognier and more petit manseng. — 7 years ago

Ryan, accurate as usual :) The PM is really challenging in the cellar (dealing with high brix vs soaring alcohol) - hard to make the same wine vintage to vintage. Linden/GlenManor make exquisite dessert builds, BTW. I opened a 2008 from Jim that was perfection. Dry or almost dry styles are becoming the new bullseye for winemakers. Michael Shaps 2016 offering is great example! Personally, I am ok with 3-5% RS when the acidity is rocking - love it with Thai & Indian cuisine :) One can hardly tell because of the balance!

Ron, Good to know on the cellar piece. I didn’t know it was difficult to work with. I was just floored by the quality of this one. It was the star of the dinner party as well. Everybody loved it. I agree about the residual sugar in principle although I do tend to gravitate towards drier whites. Thanks for the tips for future bottles. I have a bottle of Linden late harvest PM btw. I don’t remember the vintage off the top of my head but I tasted it at the vineyard. It was exquisite indeed.
