The People's Zin

Ridge Vineyards

Lytton Springs Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel Blend 2006

Cork giving out but why not after 19 years! Wine is escaping to fresh beauty with a little wet dog age that I like.
Holding her space in 2025
80% Zin, 16% Petite Syrah, 4% Carignane
14.7% is reigning it in on this varietal and well done! Doesn’t feel fire breathing at all 👏

Sonoma County Zinfandel 2023

Deep, dark red color. Jammy red fruit nose.
On the palate, it is not a jammy Zin. A very well balanced wine of dark red fruits, tannins, acidity, with a very long and complex finish. Great Zin.

East Bench Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel 2009

Excellent Zin with a lot of fruits; blackberries, cranberries and some dark cherries. Also, spice, cedar and more. Did not know what to expect as Zin’s don’t go for a lot of aging. Happy I found this one in my cellar and have a couple of other Ridge wines I need to drink up.

I stopped purchasing Ridge years ago as I got into lighter wines. Visited Ridge Winery last century and had an excellent tasting as I remember and met and chatted with Paul Draper.

Love it. The standard for Napa zin. Plums, prunes, earth, cocoa, acid, well balanced, crowd pleaser, but still interesting. So good — 4 years ago

We enjoyed this Zin a lot. Tasting notes include all spice, floral, and strawberries. It’s potent with 15% alcohol. Paired well with dark chocolate and honey/garlic pork chops. — 6 years ago

Dark fruits, oak, and herbs combine in this zin forward red blend. Great upon opening and excellent day 2. Not familiar with Mataro (only 5%) but blended to perfection. — 7 months ago

Dark fruit notes. Big flavors of leather, smoke, bacon, spices and Oak. Full bodied with quite a bit of tannins without being too tannic. Nice and big Zin.

Seen this for years and thought it was Lodi for some reason, but this is legit Sonoma fruit and made in a very traditional way: all brambly and spicy, great extract and personality. Balanced and cohesive all the way thru modest finish. Great QPR as well — 10 months ago

Vine Starr Sonoma County Zinfandel 2016

This is perfect for July 4th. Zin that tastes like zin but without the chocolate and oak. Could smell it for days. Palate is strawberry jam with stone, forest, and bright acidic fruit. If you like the minimalist wine movement, you must try this. Especially the 2016. — 7 years ago

A. Rafanelli

Unfiltered Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel 2022

Young but the apotheosis of Dry Creek. Such depth and purity of Zin fruit (spicy black raspberry) and dry gravelly earth on the nose. Deep, fruity, but composed and minerally at the same time on the palate. A little clenched on the finish because yes I’m drinking it too young. But the stuffing, balance, and structure are there for many years development. I love these guys’ Zins. — 7 months ago

@Tom Casagrande, it’s been many years (25?) since I’ve had a Rafanelli Zinfandel, we drank a lot of it back in the 1990s — great to hear they’re still killing it!!

@Doug Powers Dave’s daughter Shelly is making the wine now but the spirit is still there and fruit quality is paramount. IMO, their Zin needs time

Blocks 7 & 22 Napa Valley Zinfandel 2021

2021 vintage. The best, sub $20 resto cost Napa/Sonoma Zin I've had in ages. May hafta pick up a few cases. Excellent balance and concentration throughout. Gives me hope for CA Zinfandel that I've not had in nearly two decades. That's a whole lotta Zin under the bridge. 0 — 8 months ago

I love a good Zin but there is so much sweet, simple, jammy crap out there. Gotta stick with the classic producers.

This was a good Zin, rustic red in color, coffee, black cherry, a little jammy up front, some minerals, acidity was good, not as complexed as I would like , but good, finish was lighter than expected. — 7 years ago
