This was really fun trying alongside The Judge (once they were revealed). I guessed this was 3-5 year old Cali chardonnay, and guessed it was a Montagu Ritchie. Crazy power to this...it mellowed a touch with time in the glass, but it was large and in charge. Smoked marshmallows, lemon oil, hazelnut and honeyed fruits. Viscous and rich on the palate. — 7 years ago

This was fantastic, and my first experience with vintage Dom Ruinart. Yeasty but balanced out by mineral driven notes (slate, limestone). Medium bodied (more full when compared to the Marc Hebrart). Little bit of honey. Super smooth mousse. More reductive in style with a tiny bit of burnt matchstick I called this 2006 Blanc de Blanc champagne. — 7 years ago
Mid Gold in colour. The tell tale grape pulp aromas of the Muscat grape with florals - “sweet pea” said my good wife. On the palate fulsome fresh grapey flavours finishing dry with a skinnsy bitterness. From the region of Lazio where the principal city is Rome with the famous football (soccer) club of the same name - Lazio FC. — 7 years ago

Wonderful evening at the City Club courtesy of Jeff’s hosting at the Friday group. Cellar guessing Jeff is a dangerous game as he’s the type who plans to throw curveballs! All wines served blind.
Spice and white pepper on the nose. So much so that I guessed it was a Cab Franc Blend. Wasn’t peppery enough to be Loire valley, but I guessed it was a Cab Franc/merlot based right bank blend based on the leather and dusty cherry notes. Well, I was fairly close! Great wine. — 8 years ago

My guess here was ‘02 champagne. Wasn’t too far off was but was surprised at the youth. Started off too cold but gained richness as it warmed. Dominant note of hazelnut here. Not many reductive notes, thankfully. Really nice. — 8 years ago
Here for this like the hook in a Carly Rae Jepsen song. Bright and fresh with disco ball acidity, you can tell she went to private school but is just longing to let loose at the club in the city. Getting a very Britney Spears “Hit Me Baby One More Time” vibe. Plan skits and pony tails for Gods — 9 years ago

Cerebral and spectacular. Best Bordeaux I’ve had. A stunning showing at 19yrs young. I called this early 2000s Bordeaux but actually thought it was Right Bank...there is a gorgeous medley of soft and ripe dark blue and black fruit here. Not juicy, but more floral and expressive. Palate was lifted with fantastic structure and softened tannins (thanks to 4hrs in the decanter). Pipe tobacco but hardly any herbal or leather notes. The softness of this wine is what made it a star. Flavor without being dense. Co WOTN. — 7 years ago

Always just silly good. One of my favorite aromatics from champagne...”oxidative” with yeast, toffee, and caramelized nougat. Palate carrying sweet fruit cradled by oak with impeccable texture. I called this NV champagne, but mentioned it could be Krug. I will state though that once the producer was revealed, we were all a bit surprised based on the palate...it was rich, but wasn’t as powerful as expected? Then again, it was the third of three champagnes served so the power effect may have dwindled based on palate expectations. — 7 years ago

This was very light and refreshing. Could see this being super easy to sip on these hot TX summer days. Tons of green apple, pear, citrus and chalky limestone. Right down the middle. I called this non vintage champagne. — 7 years ago
City Club tasting wonderful grenache blend without the Priorat cost. A mueselo from Monstant. — 7 years ago

This was insane. Wow! WOTN for me. Dark chocolate, black pepper, dates, burnt graham cracker. So incredibly dense yet balanced! Best CdP I’ve ever had. — 8 years ago

As stated above, this is a perfect example of a curveball. Most people guessed white burgundy, though I did guess west coast Chardonnay. No one would have guessed Jeff would serve this. Nose was quite clean with a sweet lemon cream note. Not overly buttery and oaked which I attribute to this not being 100% chard. I don’t normally like these wines, but tasting blind shows your true colors! — 8 years ago
I’ve rated this many times before and will simply state that this is an absolutely wonderful Grand Cru Rosé that @Martin G Rivard introduced me to! Thank you, Martin!

Tart and youthful. Underripe black cherry, blackberries and herbal on the nose. Leather, cassis, cherry tobacco and crunchy cranberry on the palate with gripping tannins. Decanted 4hrs and needed it. I called this mid 2000s left bank Bordeaux. — 7 years ago

Tasted alongside the Napa chardonnay from Kongsgaard, this was more elegant and finesse driven in every way. The nose wasn’t as bold with the oak and the palate was more acidic with lemon tart, lemon cream, and honeysuckle sporting a lengthy finish. My understanding is that The Judge builds in power with age so this is a peek at the very beginning of its climb. I guessed this was 2014 Aubert Ritchie. — 7 years ago
This was in a zebra wine club at Bar & Garden in Culver City CA Oct 2017. Fantastic Italian white- citrus, sage-pine. Medium to full bodies. Had while cooking Lobster Tartine and Mussels and Clams. — 7 years ago

Ageless. Based on color, I immediately thought Napa but the palate had me second guessing. Some rose petal, spice and tart cherry. Cedar. This tastes so much younger than the ‘88 I opened a few months back. Wonderful wines. — 8 years ago

Shame on me for not guessing this! My favorite Roussanne. So much pear, orange marmalade and honeyed mango. Gained some more floral notes as it sat in the glass. — 8 years ago

Pear and stone fruit. Light. Porch wine. Refreshing and value is right for sipping with friends. City Club Italian tasting- nice. — 10 years ago
This sent me reeling back to a long ago trip to Italy that featured a stay in the amazing food city of Bologna, where I first tasted Pignoletto. The nutty flavor, so perfect w Parma prosciutto, or with a fresh porcini & truffle salad...like Proust's madeleines, the memories! I love the hint of Sherry/Jura oxidized opulence, and was pleasantly surprised this is btg at Cardinal Club in PDX! — 11 years ago

My other Co-WOTN. For me, these wines are up there with the best in Napa. The history, the people and the wines are just top shelf. Loved our visit here earlier this year. Having had the ‘13, ‘14 and ‘16, this seems to be the most accessible and certainly more so than the ‘13. This was powerful the entire evening and the fruit stayed ripe and sweet covering the red, blue and black spectrum. Graphite, dark chocolate up front, but it did turn more elegant at the finish showing potpourri and baking spices. Sheer To Kalon power. — 7 years ago
