Tar And Roses

Cédric Bouchard

Roses de Jeanne Presle Blanc de Noirs Champagne 2011

Powerful but not overpowering. Layers of apples, apricot and some sweeter notes of honey as well. Good acidity and a long finish. Opened the bottle and enjoyed throughout our lunch. Paired it with the the fish dishes to start and even the two tomato sauce based pastas. Stands up fine to the bigger dishes. — 5 years ago

Bottle variance! Last one was bit maderized but this one was showing much better. Soft mature ripe fruit of peaches, compote and bread yeast toast. Enjoyed it. — 7 years ago

Cannubi Boschis Barolo Nebbiolo 2000

In December I pledged to keep this a long time, but Joe had better ideas. This time, 3 hr decant paid off. Rich, smoky, tarry nose. Florals, too. Feminine, delicate but powerful, the former by light berry and cherry element, the latter by perfect, fine tannins and tar. Last of half case, this could've gone longer. Bottle variation curious...just edged the Clerico for me, though the Clerico was way better value. — 7 years ago

Ciabot Mentin Ginestra Barolo Nebbiolo 2000

Youthful aromas of black cherries and tar; deep and quite classically structured, with well-integrated tannins. I would give this another four or five years of cellaring before trying again. — 9 years ago

Wow. Long finish on this deep and beautiful wine. Roses, earth, chewy tannins, and something beautifully dusty. Just wow. — 11 years ago

Otin Fiorin Piè Rupestris-Nebioli Barolo Nebbiolo 1999

Wow, this is a stunner! Much more powerful, alive and tannic than the 2000. The nose alone is already so beguiling. A first hint of maturity is there. Tobacco leaf, cedar, road tar, dried flowers and red fruits. Huge finish. — 6 years ago

On the nose, more concentration in the fruits. Black raspberries, raspberries, cherries, strawberries, watermelon, chewing gum and pink roses & florals. Palate is richer/thicker, more concentrated than the Masseria. Cherries, strawberries, watermelon, raspberries, well done chalkiness...not over done, fine medium intensity volcanic minerals with a rich, round, ripe, beautiful acid finish. Delicious. — 7 years ago

Langhe Nebbiolo 2013

Crazy good for this price range and will get better with age. Still a bit tight at first so needs at least an hour in the decanter. Tobacco, tar, rose petals, cherries and grippy tannins. — 9 years ago

Decanted for 2 hours and it starts to open up. Tar, wood, floral, some sort of sweet aroma undertone, fruity on the palate. still tastes vibrant and young! — 11 years ago

Bric dël Fiasc Barolo Nebbiolo 1989

Brownish amber color, translucent. Aromatic nose with notes of soy, faint black cherries, tar, a little menthol and some molasses. Very linear in the mouth. Flush face. Nice old wine finish. More structure than fruit. With air some wood notes appear and the soy dominates more. Interesting wine but fruit is in the rear view mirror. — 6 years ago

Monprivato di Castiglione Falletto Barolo Nebbiolo 2000

Beautiful, aromatic bouquet of rose, tar, wet wood and jasmine. Long finish of smoke, bark and ash. The anticipated Nebbiolo grip is not immediately evident, but opens over time. Complex, persistent, holds my attention the whole way through. — 7 years ago

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2001

2001 vintage. Medium garnet. Quite fresh fruit forward raspberry and red plums. Roses and heavy oil fumes. Touches of smoke and woody notes. On the palate, very smooth, silky. Medium bodied. Medium plus acidity, high tannins - very integrated and mouth puckering. Finish is edging to long - fruit forward and cherry liqueur notes. Very decent and drinking well. Would personally keep for another 5+ years before opening as this is still evolving nicely. Still lacks soul - a little too manufactured for my palate. — 9 years ago
