The Bin 128 from Penfolds 2013 vintage shows dense and dark purple tasted at 14.5% ABV. Vinified from 100% shiraz varietal from South Australia's Coonawarra region. The Bin 128 label was first produced from the 1962 vintage, the Bin series introduced in 1959 and Penfolds was established in 1844 now over 170 years of history behind it. This wine has a heritage built into it, quality extracted from the terroir and finest quality grapes and aged for 12 months after fermentation in French oak barrels. Aromatics of densely concentrated blackberry, strawberry, limestone minerality, black peppercorn, blueberry and a hint of sweet hay. The juicy, mouthwatering impact of this wonderful wine entices the senses to enjoy the unique texture and complexity of this well-balanced, well-integrated tapestry of aromas, flavours and elegant tannins. Like drinking a piece of history, I felt privileged to taste the 1985 and 1983 vintages of Knudsen Erath Pinot Noir with two of the children of Cal Knudsen. Graceful, arching secondary and tertiary notes of sous bois, dried rose petal, wild mushrooms, brown sugar and dried mint. Brickish in the glass, like a faded tapestry, one can detect how it might have been at its zenith. There is, interestingly still moderate acidity lacing together notes of game and iron ore, there's not much fruit to be found at this stage. — 10 years ago

This wine is stunning, in the same way that encountering a beautiful stranger can take your breath away. The nose draws you in with subtle layers of dried flowers, anise, Italian plum, forest floor and juniper berries. This rich, complex tapestry continues on the palate, the texture every bit as elegant as the nose. Polished tannins and structure that could easily carry it another 20 years in the cellar, but still fresh and vibrant today. Crushed stone, dried herbs and bay leaf. Outstanding smoky nose, lychee, kumquat, strawberries during a rainfall (marcel deiss exclusive note!), marmalade, honeydew melon, kerosene, the panoply of fruit notes goes on... A deep amber color, suggesting a heavyweight sweet wine, but the riveting acid and uncanny finesse of this wine gives it a buoyancy on the palate that is remarkable. Rich and long, seamless tapestry of lychee and marmalade and melon fruit notes, I find I'm running out of the bottle so fast...purchased as the star from the winery 2 years ago, will last easily 15 more years. La Mouline proved to be my second favorite of the three Guigal La La's. All three are 100-point wines from the 1999 vintage. La Mouline is, dare I say it? The most feminine of the trio. It also contains the largest percentage of Viognier blended into Syrah. It makes perfect sense that this liquid masterpiece should boast vibrant floral notes, violets, black cherry and blackberry tart, vanillin and star anise. Pure sensuality on the palate, ribbons of flavor and texture create a rich and decadent tapestry in the mouth. The finish is long and seamless, with white pepper and cassis notes.
