Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc 2022

A nice blend of 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Semillon and 5% Sauvignon Musque pale lemon with aromas of tropical and citrus fruits with smoky floral notes. On the palate flavors of apple, melon, pear and lemon citrus notes with nice balance, crisp medium finish ending with fruit and stony mineral notes. Nice value! — a year ago

Napa Valley Syrah 2014

Perhaps my favorite from Stony Hill. Not as robust as their cab, but not pinot noir either. Some earth, raspberry, vanilla. Lovely on a winter's day. — 4 years ago

Hard not to like these wines. Great balance, fruit, and acidity. Really allows the grape to shine through.

Love these wines. Clean and balanced fruit with well integrated, but not dominant oak. Not your typical Napa wine.

Very strong dark fruits hit very fast and drop quickly. Low tannin. Mild finish. Very drinkable. — 6 years ago

Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay 2013

This is clearly intended to portray a Burgundian profile. And it largely succeeds. The Chablis-like nose has wet stony earth and apply fruit. Crisp acids. Minerally flavors. The problem — and this is a problem I see whenever someone in a region with abundant sunshine actively tries to rein in the ripeness by picking early — is that by picking before the time when nature gives you the ripeness IT wants, the wines somehow lack depth and feel a little “clipped.” So, in sum, I like this, but it lacks the depth to be profound. — 7 years ago

Pipers Brook Vineyard

Pinot Noir 2019

Pale to mid Ruby in colour with great clarity. Aromatic red and black Cherry notes with rose petals. A stalky whole bunch note with a little spice. Those fresh cherry notes of medium weight but medium plus intensity transfer through to the palate. Very fresh, young with great potential for future complexity. I can see why it won the Trophy for Best Pinot Noir at both Royal Adelaide and Royal Hobart - both shows with extensive and high quality Pinot entries. Too young but I had to try the first of 6. Next in a year plus. Technical background: (whole berry ferments with 20% whole bunches. Aged in 25% new puncheons and Barriques). Ended up having the 2nd bottle 195 weeks later on 25th October 2024. Just a stunning Pinot Noir and even improving on that 2 Trophies standard. — 4 years ago

@Greg Gosselin Yes Greg. They have been high quality producers in the Tamar River for a while now. Also make a good sparkling.

He was certainly a giant of Tasmanian viticulture. Matthew Jukes (UK) once said that a wine he made was”the greatest sparkling wine made outside of Champagne “.

Les Monts Damnés Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc 2014

One of the great terroirs of Sancerre, paired with buffalo chicken salad because why not. This wine is just pure pleasure—rich and expansive but with plenty of mineral cut, stony but honeyed and suffused with a kaleidoscope of citrus and stone fruit, with a hint of marzipan and toast on the finish. — 7 years ago

Les Tillets Meursault Chardonnay 2011

The south facing floral, pure and mineral 2011 Tillets is in such a good spot. It’s captivatingly aromatic with layers of honeyed white orchard fruit, lilies, toasted hazelnut and gun smoke. The palate is vibrant and so elegant with a crystalline purity, balanced citrusy acids and a persistent stony mineral finish. Excellent vintage for Roulot. — 2 years ago

Domaine Servin

Montée de Tonnerre Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2017

Medium yellow. Meyer lemon, lemon curd, yellow delicious apple, underripe white peach, sea salt, yeasty, briny, stony minerality, and hints of cheese rind. Tart citrus and high tone minerality on the palate. Elevated acidity, 12.5% abv, medium+ finish. Importer’s notes: From the right side of the Serein River, situated right next to the Grand Cru Blanchot. A soft and elegant wine, the Montée de Tonnerre is situated in the same line as the Grand Crus. The notable white clay helps to develop intense fruit and floral aromas. The older vines add the depth and complexity in the mouth. Regarded by many as the best and most consistent Premier Cru in Chablis. Lime-clay soils with Kimmeridgian fossils. Fermentation and maturing in stainless steel tanks. — 5 years ago

Vieilles Vignes Morgon Gamay 2017

Sourced from the Saint Joseph and Grand Crus subzones of the appellation, which give fine, stony wines. A high-lying sandy parcel gives more complexity, structure, and acidity to the wine. Medium Ruby with red fruit and floral aromas. On the palate flavors of red plum, cherry, banana and earthy mint. Vivid acidity, medium fine tannins, dry with a medium+ finish. Very good and some bottle age will benefit. Tasting Sample. — 6 years ago

Napa Valley Pinot Chardonnay 1974

Tasted blind. Medium gold color. Looks older. Notes of dried apricots and beeswax. In the mouth it's nicely rich, but there's no significant acidity to balance against the fruit. We are all convinced this isn't Chardonnay. I guess 70's Bordeaux Blanc. No, its (old) CA Chardonnay. Interesting data point. — 7 years ago
