So happy to get this in the glass. Have not seen around CA, used to buy back home. Incredible terroir here, absolute truth in the glass. Steep, decomposed granite and old vine Syrah! Intensely deep black fruit, explosive florals, hot stones, iron, crushed apricot, resinous herb, cocoa powder. Loving the balance now, this will age beautifully. — 3 years ago
Tasted this a year ago and tried again. Tucked atop a steep hill in the Langhe is the small village of Barbaresco, home of the GAJA winery. Pale lemon with an array of aromas of tropical, stone & citrus fruits with floral notes. On the palate rich pear & peach flavors with nutty herb and spicy notes. Long finish ending with fruit, herbs and generous mineral character. Nice! Aged well, will continue for another decade! — 4 years ago
Gavi comes from small growing area in northwestern Italy located north of Genoa on steep slopes of Ligurian Apennines. White label is La Scolca’s everyday wine, an alternative to their “Black Label”. From Cortese di Gavi grape (younger vines), pale yellow color with aromas of stone and citrus fruits, extended lees aging. On the palate flavors of apple and lemon, nutty notes, nice mouthfeel. Medium finish, vivid acidity ending with a mineral character. Nice! — 2 months ago
Vines are planted on small, steep cirques with an eastern/south-eastern exposure at altitudes of between 250 and 300 metres. Medium lemon color with muted aromas of citrus, stone fruits and nutty floral notes. On the palate flavors of apple, melon and lemon citrus with notes of honey and nutty oak. Medium+ finish, vivid acidity and ends with nutty mineral character. Nice! — 3 years ago

Located halfway up the hill dominating the principal valley of Barolo, supported by steep slopes lined by orderly vineyards, lies the 15th century Abbey of Annunziata. Medium Ruby with aromas of ripe berry fruits with earthy herb notes, aged for 12 months on oak. On the palate flavors of cherry, strawberry and raspberry with sweet vanilla spice. Fine tannins, vivid acidity, medium+ finish ending with earthy fruit character. Good value, Barolo like without $$! — 2 years ago
2012 vintage. Old vine Syrah ( 60+ years) on granite soils on very steep slopes. Much more intense and mineral compared to the 2012 Thalabert tasted alongside ( as reflected in the higher price tag). Profound, intense and long, this could be mistaken for Hermitage. A terrific wine from a vintage that remained under the radar Abv. 13,5%. — 3 years ago

Grgić Pošip, Korčula Island 2022
A Croatian white with California roots and Adriatic soul.
Crafted by Grgić Vina, the Croatian project of Napa legend Miljenko “Mike” Grgich (of Judgment of Paris fame), this 100% Pošip is sourced from steep, sun-drenched vineyards on Korčula Island, overlooking the Adriatic.
Pošip, a native Croatian grape born from a spontaneous crossing of two local varieties, delivers a crisp, dry, and complex profile. This 2022 vintage is beautifully aromatic, with notes of citrus, ripe melon, apple, and savory herbs, rounded by hints of vanilla, hazelnut, smoke, and lemon rind. There’s even a faint whisper of resin and orange blossom in the background.
On the palate, it’s voluptuous yet vibrant, a brilliant balance of brisk minerality, layered fruit, and a clean, snappy finish.
Pairing tip: It sings with seafood, think oysters, shrimp pasta, grilled white fish, or even creamy pasta with wild fennel. Also works nicely with soft cheeses.
A standout wine that’s both regional and refined, offering a true taste of Dalmatian coastal charm.
Cheers!
