Château Smith Haut Lafitte

Grand Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2000

This is showing very impressively, all the more so considering the very unimpressive 2001 I had recently after loving both vintages on release. It is in the heavyweight class no doubt and has only budged a little bit since release, with the structure more assertive and some of the baby fat gone and showing its bones. Visually it still has the deep, dark inky color of a wine barely past release so I was actually surprised not to find it more obviously fruit-gobbed on the palate. It's a packed and stacked wine to be sure, but the stuffing isn't about fruit so much as tarry Graves asphalt and gravel. The fruit it does show is red-complexioned, which is surprising since these are all blueberry and blackberry on release. Time in the decanter fills in a lot of the empty spaces and makes it positively voluptuous - still with a thick coat of tannin but soft and refined in texture. Not quite cashmere but not rough either. This is vastly richer, denser, and fresher than the 2001 was. It is at a point where it's probably fair to put to rest any doubts about ageability - it's stuffed but in proportion and fresh without being primary. But this and the 2001 were also the last SHLs I enjoyed on release - by 2005 the style seemed to have gone over the top. If the 2005 tastes like this in 5 years I'll have to eat some crow. That said, there's no doubt this is sort of a slutty style of Graves, not a wine for those looking for elegance or subtlety, although if it can keep developing at this rate the old "tour de force" cliche may actually fit just fine. — 10 years ago

Salon

'S' Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil Brut Chardonnay 2002

If you've not had a Salon with 20 + years on it then it is difficult to assess what this infant will grow up to be. Packed and stacked. At this stage of life it makes no sense for me to buy new vintages. — 10 years ago

Agree. The -96:es are also like screaming babies; and too early to drink.

yeah, I have had to face actuarial realities also. And it is hard to pay $350/bottle when 88 sold for $60! Salon is great, though.

Alban Vineyards

Reva Alban Estate Vineyard Syrah 2010

2010- Decanted 90 minutes. Inky dark purple, dark as night. Viscous. Gorgeous aromatics with pungent dark red and blue fruits; smelled like a barrel sample. So amazingly textured and stacked like crazy with awesome bracing acidity. Wow. Alban just never disappoints, even a young'in like this one! — 11 years ago

2008. It's all autolytic and chalky-citrus character today. But there is so much more complexity in this wine that will only to be uncovered with time. This wine is stacked and built for the long haul. — 10 years ago

Montevertine

Le Pergole Torte Sangiovese 2008

@DIG Wine SF. Pergole Torte 2010 So good. Stacks the best of the 08 and 09 together. I would drink the 08 while this integrates—hmmm, or maybe I'll just drink the 10 forever like every other 10. Ripeness with tension. Evergreen, moss. This is stacked yet feminine. This is going to be really good in a few years when the tannins and the wine settle a bit. Snails, earth. Concentration and finesse. — 12 years ago

Chimney Rock

Clone 7 Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Reminiscent of walking through a cold, wet cellar stacked with new French oak barrels. Cacao nibs, black coffee, dusty soil, and dark red and black fruits are followed by a long dry finish — 10 years ago

Grapesmith & Crusher

Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Realized that I'm posting an empty bottle to my delectable profile at 9 am. I swear this is not how my day began. Evidence, however, is stacked against me. Drank the whole bottle while watching The Tudors in my snuggie and being like 'Noooooooo!' That being said, this wine is drinkable and fun, allowing for great gesticulating. — 10 years ago

Château Beauséjour

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 1990

Well well well, it's the famous 1990 Beausejour Duffau. Perfect wine? Not a chance but still pretty stacked. Very full and fleshy with a structure that's still rough and rugged; combined with an intense gravelly personality this had me figuring it was a Left Banker. Long life ahead for sure. — 10 years ago
