The Informant Wahluke Slope Syrah Blend 2013

Bought at winery, 300 cases made, my last bottle. I’ve loved this wine, I’ve struggled with this wine. Love the Syrah component, struggled with the 3% Viognier addition. Is this wine too floral? Final verdict: no. How good is this wine? Purple-red in color, medium extraction, very good clarity. Leather and cherry fruit leather notes in nose, buttery floral aftertaste; later white pepper flavor emerges. Medium seed bitterness, moderate skin astringency. Can still age this one, frankly, as the tannins and acids are there. A tasty but challenging flavor profile, and a well-made wine, but not for everyone — 7 years ago

Shea Wine Cellars

Estate Shea Vineyard Pinot Noir 2011

Bought at winery. Light to moderate extraction, purple red. Mixed berry fruit leather, menthol-mint, barrel smoke and mushroom notes in nose. Blackberry, cherry, mint, cola and anise flavors, slightly tart, moderate seed bitterness, skin astringency on tip of tongue on finish. Great complexity and varietal character, even from first pour out of the bottle with no decanting — 7 years ago

Rara Avis Columbia Valley Red Blend 2013

65% Grenache, 31% Mourvèdre, 4% Syrah. Brick red with some purple in color. White pepper, raspberry and mustard greens in nose. Flavors of cherry fruit leather, strawberry jam and a spearmint note in mouth, moderate seed tannins across front of tongue. Increased complexity, plenty of tannins for further aging. Impressed with development of this wine since initial tasting at their Woodinville tasting room — 8 years ago

Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2014

Pronounced, layered aromas of blackberries, plums, lavender and lilac, the 2014 Red is Seed Wine's inaugural release and is composed of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Malbec and 10% Cabernet Franc. Aged for 16 months on new French oak, this polished Argentine red exhibits fabulous purity of fruit at the core, cradled in fine, velvety tannins. There is a nice burst of mineral-tinged acidity towards the finish that adds subtle lift and textural elegance. A lovely wine for a first effort. Less than 200 cases produced. I should also mention, I manage social media for this winery. — 9 years ago

Clos Roche Blanche

Touraine Pineau d'Aunis Rosé 2014

Showing mostly melon with a dollop of pepper and celery seed, it is softer, rounder, and doesn't show nearly as much Pineau d'Aunis character as the 2013, nor does it have the same structure or intensity, but it is still delicious and those very characteristics (or the lack thereof) may give it a wider appeal. Still, it is a wine that elicits a smile just from taking a whiff from the glass, and continues to deliver pure pleasure. — 7 years ago

Longplay

Lia's Vineyard Chehalem Mountains Pinot Noir 2007

Library wine purchased at the tasting room. Third of three bottles tasted. Plum brown in color. Prune mint blueberry cherry fruit leather and briar notes in nose. Berry, tea, mint, orange, plum and soy flavors in mouth, cherry finish with minor seed tannins. Challenging to judge a Pinot Noir aged this long, and not enough experience at it as a wine drinker, but it proved a surprisingly decent pour and most enjoyable. Much more enjoyable than the previous bottle tasted three months earlier, bottle variation perhaps? — 7 years ago

Maison Bertrand Ambroise

St. Romain Chardonnay 2011

This wine has an apple and lime interplay, with matchstick, pencil, lemon oil and hazelnut scents forever. Gas lamp, briny yellow olive, lemon pith, lemon seed, white clay, clean smoke. Such an easy, deft and focused wine. Puts some pep in your step. #Bourgogne #bourgogneblanc #frenchwine #whiteburgundy #whitewine #burglove — 8 years ago

Clos de la Chatenière Vieilles Vignes Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Chardonnay 2010

Very tightly wound, dominated by oak still on the nose, but wow. There was a pepper seed aroma that was interesting. This wine needs 10+ years easy. 30,000 vines per hectare! — 9 years ago

Antico Monastero Barbaresco 2010

This is like the Beaujolais of Nebbiolos I've had. Clear, day bright, medium- viscosity, no sediment. Ruby color with a bricking to orange rim, medium concentration.
Nose: the wine is so reductive and fruit forward its unique. Very serious deep strawberry notes. Stewed strawberries, overripe strawberry and cherries. White and red rose petals. Fresh and dried. This wine didnt see a ton of oak seemingly. Some light barnyardy earthiness. Light leather and fennel seed notes.
Palate: medium bodied, ripe red cherries, cherry skin and pits, strawberries, even slightly jammy. Licorice and white flowers, leather and some clove like spice to it. Maybe some cedar, hard to distinguish. Med+ acid, high tannins, medium finish. Lovely wine for the price point.

Road Less Traveled Cabernet Franc 2014

I love this wine, year after year. Densely extracted, deep purple-red. White pepper, black currant, mint, mushroom (well, Chinese black fungus is better, but not so familiar to most, so close enough) and other herbal notes in nose. White pepper, berry, maybe blackberry flavors, soft mouthfeel, tart seed bitterness, berry in finish. Some skin astringency and white pepper in aftertaste. Love the complexity; flavors are expressive and varietally on point. I’m not sure if further flavor integration with aging is possible, nor if further aging can improve on the current acid-alcohol-tannin balance. But that may just reflect the fact I drink up my wines too quickly to age them sufficiently. After their Jongleur-Petit Verdot, this is my favorite red of theirs. Also note how different the tasting notes are for this vs. a year ago. Is it just me, or are the wine dynamics really changing that much? — 7 years ago

Pouilly-Fuissé Chardonnay 2014

Really love this P-F, it has it all... Crisp acidity, minerality, well integrated stem/seed notes and med-long finish. I'd love to see how our 6-pack will age over the coming years, but we're halfway through and it hasn't even been in the basement for a year yet, it's so damn tasty! — 7 years ago

Koehler-Ruprecht

Kabinett trocken Pinot Noir 2014

Rad Spätburgunder from the Pfalz; Koehler-Ruprecht never steers me wrong. Bracing and a bit rustic yet still elegant. Pours a medium (-) ruby garnet hue. Benefits from a tiny bit of air before serving but not like, necessary to decant it either. Wild raspberries and strawberries, blood orange peel, fennel seed, woodsy spice and birch bark, mushroomy, forest floor earthiness, and some floral rosehip character on the nose. The palate has more bracing, alpine red berry fruit, woodsy spice, rose floral character, and forest floor, supported by lively, medium (+) to high acid, and medium (-) tannin. Light to medium (-) body. Solid stuff. In a nice place right now, maybe would peak in a couple years but no compelling reason to hold on to it much either. — 8 years ago
