Leroy 1969 Echezeaux
This 1969 vintage is the work of Henri Leroy, father of the "old lady" (Lalou Bize‑Leroy).
First glass: A hint of rotten egg and fruit, but I could not perceive much structure.
Second glass: Very intense honey notes with scattered dried flowers, a mix of jammy fruit and savoury umami. It felt like honey and peony paste melting on a soda cracker in the mouth. The structure is rounded.
Third glass: After an hour, the wine fully opened up. Tertiary aromas emerged – leather, forest floor, earth. Tannins are silky, structure balanced, making it highly enjoyable.
Fourth glass: Tea notes… a faint ginseng oolong tea.
Overall: With a fill level above the shoulder, this nearly 60‑year‑old wine showed a satisfying state – mature and balanced. It felt a bit tired at first, but once opened up, it became remarkably elegant and surprising. — 2 days ago

The very pleasant nose did not translate to taste in the way expected of this maker. Twenty years later, I believe this wine is still evolving, requiring more patience. The old adage about Burgundy applies - you are going to kiss some frogs before they become prince. Having said that, a long decant was useful. — 6 months ago

The last time I was fortunate to enjoy the 2009 Bourgogne Aligoté was early 2025 so imagine my excitement to try this again. Looking back at my previous notes, not much has changed!
Opened about 30min prior to service. The 2009 pours a straw color with medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is still developing and reductive (as is common) with strong notes of struck match, apple, lime, herbs and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with high acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and a touch saline. Worked well with toro crudo. This bottle still needs air. Remarkable Aligoté. I’m revising my previous assessment on drinking window; this example seems to have the stuffing to show deep into next decade. Drink now with maybe a short decant, through 2039.
