I don't really want to describe it as I know there's no way my words will do it justice so take what I write here and times that goodness by 100. It's a rose gold colour on the eye with the finest streams of bubbles rising in the glass. On the nose it's like cherry jam on toast with exceptional acidity that makes it so fresh and vibrant. I regret saying other wines are smooth because this champagne is the definition of that! It's juicy on the palate with a sturdy backbone and flavours of apple and berries coming through. I would run a marathon just for another sip of this amazing elixir. — 9 years ago

Very plummy fruit with cherries and cut grass. There was a pleasant tingly acidity. Merlot often has an overly earthy minerality that I don't like, which is at least partly a matter of where it's grown. This wine doesn't have that earthiness, instead the minerality is dry stone. I thought the tannins were pretty light, and this is light bodied in general, just a little alcoholic in the finish. This drinks very easily. It's not as complex as many Merlots, but it's very pleasant. — 9 years ago

A very tasty Steen. Dry, with loads of citrus and green apple, floral, herbal and mineral notes. For $10, I think one would find this to be an exceptional value. Drink it with Mussels steamed with a bit of the wine, garlic, a touch of olive oil and a bit of parsley and yowsa! — 8 years ago

Dark fruit makes your olfactory senses dance as you approach the plate and open this bottle. The layers of complexity are astounding. Cherry and leather are up as you round first base, but you continue in the glory with second and third base easily with black cherry and blackberry while this wine mandates you round third and head home with the toasted vanilla. This 2013 Winemaker's Handprint Merlot is a home run people! I mean the ball is hit out of the park and still hasn't hit the ground grand slam! The wine is a blend of two vineyards, one each from #alexandervalley #drycreekvalley . — 8 years ago

When you hike in the Finger Lakes, you can easily think you're in Burgundy or Alsace. The topography is very close and the climate is just a little more continental. So the choice of grape varieties follows naturally. Pear, apple, and a little pineapple fruit come across in this wine. It has some stony and steely minerality, but less than typical for this region. There's a lot of vanilla and butter, with smoke and oak. These latter elements are too strong in my opinion. And the acidity is a little too weak. If that and the fruit were stronger this would be on par with Chablis. So it's a little off balance. But I enjoyed it very much with a salmon salad. — 9 years ago

2012 vintage. From the "Grande Roche" vineyard in St.Helena, replanted in 1996 (phylloxera). 75% Cabernet sauvignon, 18% Cabernet franc, 4% Petit Verdot and 3% Merlot. Bright red. Restrained Bordeaux-like nose. Classic pure black fruit with rather high acidity. Has an old-school feel about it, built for the long run. 2012 vintage. Abv. 14,5%. 99 euro. — 8 years ago

The fruits run dry to juicy. Blackberries, dry black cherries, stewed black plum, expressions roast, herbs, black licorice, black cherry cola, tough leather, black tea, dry dark soil with stones, dry underbrush, touch of lead pencil shavings, solid acidity, tannins still need work but the structure, length, balance are excellent. However, I still won't open my for another 10-15 years. I had this a few years ago and it was seriously not ready. Good movement since then. — 9 years ago

It's Baseball & BBQ night. Go Giants! I Coravin'ed four wines to see which would pair better with pork ribs, pulled pork, seasoned baked beans & slaw. Started with the Pinot...that worked pretty well w/ the ribs but not necessarily the spicy beans. Then, the 07 Hope & Grace Malbec. That went ok. I think the H&G Malbec is perfect solo. Third...was the 09 Ridge Carignane. This was the more classic pairing...yum. However, the 05 DuMol Syrah was the real winner for all four of us. It's worked well with the beans spice and the BBQ sauce. Handled both worlds of strong spice in the beans and the sweet and light spice in the BBQ sauce. Fun experiment. — 9 years ago
