Ride & Ridden Wine Co

Beringer Vineyards

Private Reserve Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Day started with a 52 mile ride and ended with this lovely one to celebrate my birthday. Tobacco, dark berries, wood, licorice. Big full bodied Napa Cab. Embodies that classic Cab that doesn’t need a whole lot of extra to be memorable. — 5 years ago

Morgon Gamay 2017

Hay, leather, cherry, earth, a bit of a cola and candy cane too. Boy what a ride! The palate is perfectly drawn : superb acid backbone, extremely ripe cherry all along, some width, some weight, a bit of tannins this time (oh complexity), some grip and a bit of salt and meat along with a radiant cherry in a very long finish. As always this is grand 🍷 — 6 years ago

What's Corkage on Amtrak these days? Or do you just have to drink it out of a paper bag? (That's how they drink Raffault in the Loire too, I am told) ;)

Sweet fruit then bright acidity, sweet fruit then right acidity. See-sawed back and forth, what a ride! So purely Chenin. — 9 years ago

Siccagno Nero d'Avola

Just a really enjoyable wine that is both hearty and even “ big” but still refreshing.
Clearly some Brett and some effervescent feel like may hint at VA, but I find both to be well integrated and enjoyable. A deep darker-side-of-red fruit profile: red and damson plum, dried red cherry, Black licorice, olive. Has a floral sense to it, and some exotic woody undertones as well earth - like a forest after the rain . A full bodied and almost lush wine that might recall the mouthfeel if a Napa cab, but with much more refreshing a acidity coming through - never the least bit cloying or overwrought. Simply a great wine with a broad food pairing potential. That said, I do wonder if it would taste dramatically different at the source. With zero sulphur amidst a long boat ride, life in distributor warehouses, a wine shop and ultimately my euro cave, whether the original intent is preserved in its entirety. Drinking fantastically but also wondering if peak drinking is 2-3 years ahead. Again, the sulphur thing...

Shafer Vineyards

Relentless Napa Valley Syrah Petite Sirah 2013

Ron R
9.5

Visually, this is as dark as the night is black. The perfume is equally intense with mulberries, brambles, blackberries and kirsch.
The palette is perfectly delineated with black cherries, black olives, a hint of cloves and anise. Absent is the peppery signature that typically comes along for the ride. It is seamlessly woven, with polished tannins that are already well integrated. 15.8% abv which is not apparent at all. This is a top-shelf syrah that should not be missed.
No cash-box aesthetics here, just exceptional winemaking and a sense of place. Remarkable.

@Ron R I just noticed that this 13 Shafer was originally 98-100 points from parker, which is what was on the website that I bought from, but I just noticed today he downgraded it to 95 points.

C'mon @Paul T, we know that Parker can be extravagant. I factored that in when I purchased the wine. I loved it, but I knew it wasn't 98 pt juice, once tasted. He must have read my notes. He's kissing my ring 💍

Viña William Fèvre

Espino Chardonnay 2011

Earthy, herbaceous aromas of Brown, river mud and clay, cattails, plantain, fungus and peach, with matchsticks and ripe grapefruit. Medium-creamy texture sharpens into bright lemon citrus and Granny Smith morphing into crabapples. Green table grapes, sage, peppercorn, grapefruit and orchid textures shoot to clean river and trout bones. Racy, with twists and turns, a real ride down the rapids #chardonnay #chard #espino #chile #williamfèvre #mountainwine #maipoandes #maipo #SanJuandePirque #pirque — 7 years ago

Bodega Comando

La Bruja Avería Rozas de Puerto Real Grenache 2014

Earthy and meaty from jump. The pretty fruit lurks pretty far under but comes strong on the finish and as I keep sipping, along with a big herbal dose. It's a fun ride! And here I thought everything in Madrid was gray and dull. 🙄 — 8 years ago

Laurel Priorat Garnacha Blend 2014

By the end of night one the cerebral roller coaster ride left me bewildered. Despite being guilty of infanticide, the wine was not necessarily closed for business. Rather, it was like tasting four or five different wines over a few hours. A darker than usual kirsch provides a canvas for the swirling plethora of flowers, herbs, meat, and earth, with a distinctly saline minerality (which might be the only constant here). By night two it reached its destination of charmingly pleasurable and no longer required as much thought, thankfully. — 8 years ago
