Kristen & I can't thank you enough for an amazing couple of hours. We truly love you both so much. Oh ... the wine was crazy good also!! That southern hospitality is second to none! I'm stuffed, my brother made reservations for dinner at 5:30?? Blue plate special time. WNH... November is going to be a great time. @Mike R See you soon my good friend -at Castle Rowe in Raleigh, NC. — 8 years ago
Ok it is finally here - the wine nerd herd 5 year reunion has started - in 2016 - the herd met in NYC - there were amazing bonds and friendships developed and are intact to this day and growing
Initially there was @Carl Fischer @Ron R @Joe Lucca @David L as well as myself @Mike R and one other who had such a blast we have decided to this get together as a herd frequently and for most part we have been United and strong even doing zoom tastings whenever
Not long after the initial conclave in 2016 we traveled and expanded to include @Bill Bender @Shawn R @Eric L and our newest and a true foundation of youth and knowledge @Shay A and we have been to Palm Beach, Raleigh, San Diego, San Antonio, Des Moines, Paso Robles and now back to the starting place - NYC - 5 years later
Get ready New York as the herd is running hard and with purpose in the city that never sleeps
The picture / posting are two tune up tastings last Saturday with locals in Raleigh as I need practice a) red wines below 50 and b) red wines above 100
Standout to me was the Muga in the less than 50 and in the over 100 - all were good but Paul Hobbs, myriad, switchback ridge, Pulido walker
Of course the krug and aubert were good but maybe not able to keep up
The carnival of love and Don Melchor were delicious as well but were not equivalent to the Napa cabs that are all world class vineyards and winemakers
Again I say all this to say training is over and let the games begin in NYC as we have landed
Thank you @Ron R and @Carl Fischer for hosting the herd and I am stoked

51st bday at 42nd St OysterBar at Raleigh-Durham airport en route to Austin. Perfect wine for steamed oysters. Not too acidic and creamy finish. — 5 years ago
Hands down the most exemplary showing from Bordeaux of my birth year vintage. First of all, a spectacular night spent with @Mike R and @David L at Somni in Beverly Hills for a transcendent foundation shaking 20 course meal that will linger in my memory for decades. Mike sourced this bottle in Raleigh from someone who purchased on release and it screamed provenance. I was blown away by this bottle. Delicious graphite and plum fragrance on pop, zero musty vibes, cloudy garnet in the glass but showing absolutely no loss of weight, gravitas or structure. Ample rich fruit, dusty mouth staining tannins and a full, silky, sexy finish. This was next level. Thank you @Mike R for this. It is without a doubt a benchmark wine for me. — 6 years ago
Bought in Harris Teeter supermarket, in Raleigh,North Carolina, but surprisingly an excellent fruity wine with chocolate flavours; soft but structured tannins. Drank with a wonderful lamb cutlet which was tasty and juicy cooked to perfection at my son’s home by yours truly, a baked potato with sour cream and sautéed Brussel sprouts cooked by my dear wife. — 8 years ago
14' Shea Vineyard Block 5
Big boy Pinot ! Mike had decanted this for 2 hours before we enjoyed this beauty.
It displayed big, dark, complex characters. In its youth it displays bold upfront fruits - Black cherry, black raspberry. Mid palate - acid / tannins earthiness . Wrapped in a core of black fruits & red licorice. Drink in 2019 & enjoy for the next 8+ years. @Mike R Thanks again for opening your beautiful home to Kristen & I. I'll have to remember to come next time ready to eat! We love you Rhonda ! Can't wait to see you both in November. - at Castle Rowe in Raleigh, NC — 8 years ago

In Raleigh at vita vite. Was here for conference. Stumbled in and got this. Not sure retail price but was super excited as this is the second tannat I’ve found since discovering in Bolivia years ago! Light o medium, smooth and very soft. Easy drinking! — 7 years ago
The legendary ‘74 Heitz Martha’s from Magnum in the wine cellar room at the Angus Barn in Raleigh, NC. This delivered on the promise of the advance publicity I’ve heard for years. I recall reading an article about the ‘74 years ago that said this was the first vintage that David Heitz was the main winemaker. Joe had back surgery and was even hospitalized at some point so David would bring samples to his bedside and get advice. Each and every thing you enjoy about this unique winery is in this bottle. Eucalyptus, tobacco, mint, herb, cherry and tart rhubarb pie, menthol, cedar and forest floor. Still dynamic and spirited at 40+ years. A remarkable, rare treat.
The photo above the bottle shows the color variation between the ‘74 (left) and the ‘70 (right) and those hues were indicative of the wines themselves. The ‘74 was energetic with silky red fruit, the ‘70 more brooding and chewy. — 8 years ago
