Encosta Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Magnificent bottle of cabernet, especially when you consider the price point. Better than many wines priced much higher. Elegantly balanced, beautiful finish. Phillipe Melka is a rock star amongst Napa valley winemakers. — 6 years ago

Baron Philippe de Rothschild

Approachable red blend. To me, this is the pop and pour wine out of the lineup. Very plush. This reminds me of Flora Springs Trilogy Blend out of Napa with a bit more fruit on the finish. More milk chocolate than dark. Boysenberry, blue and black fruit medley.

A cab that wants to be a syrah. Black fruit dominant front, some weediness in the middle, but then rounds out rather nicely on the finish. Has a lot of black pepper on the end. Still showing some tannin here, and even a little bit of heat on the finish. I respectfully disagree with the 94.6 average on CT, as IMO this wine is a bit too unidimensional, but perhaps it is just because it's young. It echoes a previous experience I had with this wine a few years ago.

Melka

Majestique St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend

Phillipe Melkas 1st vintage (i think?) of this st emillion grand cru classe. Earthy funky had some power to it. No cab sav in this one but but drinks like its there. Intense blackberry, dusty leather and scorched earth. At 7 years old this was still young and tannic as double hockey sticks. Fun to drink but sorta wish id waited another 7 years — 7 years ago

Very very Good. Classy, muscular Text book Volnay. Better than the Fremiet. From the Henri Boillot Dinner at Phillipe Restaurant ( which was brilliant) in Melbourne back in December 2017. — 7 years ago

Viña Almaviva S.A.

Almaviva Puente Alto Red Blend 2009

Wonderful Bourdeaux type blend from Chile. This is one of the top wines produced by this Country. It is a joint venture between Baron Phillipe Rothschild who also owns Mouton Rothschild in France; and Viña Concha y Toro from Chile.
The Wine maker, Michel Friou, is French with extensive experience including stints at Chateau Margaux and the other top Wine maker in Chile: Casa Lapostolle, which is owned by the Grand Marnier family in France. There he was in charge of blending their top Cuvée, Clos Apalta.
The 2009 Almaviva, is a powerful red which is well balanced with subtle hints of graphite, chocolate and tobacco. The fruity component reminds me of black cherries. Tannins are present but mild.

So what a difference time can make - this is young and powerful and bold and big red fruit - still young - but decanted for two hours and bam wham big time good - I love the integration of the 57% merlot and 43% cab franc - thank you Phillipe Melka for such a wonderful mastered crafted wine - bravo and deep smiles — 5 years ago

Supposedly this is the number one Riesling in WA state. Dry style. Petrol on the nose. Honey, apricot, bright acidity with a slate finish.

@Shay A: I have not had this particular Wash state Riesling however I will say the last one I had was bone dry and had a nose of petrol. I wonder if it’s a characteristic of these wines?
Shay A

Shay A Influencer Badge Premium Badge

@Bryan Kesting : Seems to be. On day 2, it was very similar to day 1 with a slight decrease in the petrol but it is unmistakable. I wouldn’t say this is bone dry, but it’s definitely an off dry style. Very nice.

I consumed the leftovers. So, Shay had a bit of a different experience. There is a bit of green apple here, but quite a bit more petrol. I can imagine there was more acidity, more green apple and less petrol than yesterday but this wine is still quite enjoyable and RATHER easy to drink. For the sub $20 price point, it is a solid wine, but if you pop the cork, drink the entire bottle. At $18/bottle, you shouldn't have any left over.

Long Shadows Vintners

Pirouette Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2006

A really funky nose that left you wondering what was in the bottle. And then, like a mist that lifts from the river - the tastes and nose showed up. A Phillipe Melka version of Washington’s best grapes. Power Bordeaux blend with Syrah added in. Soft tannins and subtle fruit kept flowing in and out. Wonderful comparison to an 06 Oakville Cab. — 6 years ago

This wine is made by John Duvall of Penfolds. Dark overripe berries, smoke, cassis, currant and some smoked bacon. Not the northern Rhône/Cayuse like funky Syrahs...this is more Napa Syrah that is rich, structured and voluptuous. Notes of violets and caramel. One of my favorites of the night.

Gun Bun does it again. Always shocked with how great their wines are for the money. Wines I believe are still being made by Keith Emerson. Cakebread, Martin Ray alum and cohort of Phillipe Melka. With how long these wines have been around, I still consider them an insider’s find. Under $20 a bottle. — 7 years ago

Winner of the night!! Hands down!! Had it an hour in the decanter (should go longer), and it just opened up nicely, as you can tell by the empty glass. Phillipe Melka is at his best with Brand. I need to hide the rest of these from myself for another 6 years. Balanced, beautiful color and a great finish. — 8 years ago
