Joseph Phelps Vineyards

Insignia Estate Grown Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2004

2004 vintage. Decanted and tasted after two hours. Used a Durand but cork was great. Top-notch fill. Super chunky sed..like vintage port. Nose good, not great, but biggie structure and balance all there. Medium body. Not a personal fave but may hafta pick up a few more of these for those inclined to partake. There will be 2004 Insignia going steady for quite some time. 12.22.23. — 4 months ago

Serrat

Serrat Pinot Noir 2016

From the Mornington Peninsula (although the fruit for this Pinot Noir came from the Yarra Valley ) - this is Tom Carson’s personal project when he’s not making wine for Yabby Lake - his main job. This had strawberry and other red fruits like cherry and a small whole bunch influence. Oak is dialled right back. A medium weight palate that is yet to show its full potential. First of 3 purchased and somewhat closed. Will leave having the 2nd for a couple of years. — 3 years ago

Occidental Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018

Finally getting around to posting wines from my annual Napa trip from two weeks ago. Always goes by quick! Lots of fun new stops this year.

Really enjoyed my visiting with Will at Mending Wall where he poured Rivers-Marie as well as his personal label William & Mary.

Such a treat to try this side by side with the Summa. Very different. Quite a bit more sweet and ripe fruit here framed by good acidity and herbal crunch. Some blood orange and tangy red fruits mixed with blackberries and a great finish. Will get better, but hard to wait!

Pisano

RPF Reserva Personal de la Familia Progreso Tannat 2021

Dark blackish purple. Inviting nose of blueberry compote and overripe blackberry. Full bodied palate confirms the nose adding tarry oak in the back palate and finish. All supported by juicy medium plus acidity and wrapped in firm but velvety tannins. Finish is long and continues the palate. A polished Tannat that shows why it's the signature variety of Uruguay where it fits the country's beef culture like a dark tannic glove. Drink now through 2031. — 5 months ago

Personal Property

Sierra Foothills Red Blend 2015

2018 vintage. Light-bodied red suitable to a light chill with just a touch of steminess. Cranberry, tart cherry, lingonberry, raspberry, violet, crab apple, cherry blossom, star anise. A little heavier-bodied than a PN, but would definitely appeal to fans of the same. — 4 years ago

Not quite pop and pour, but close! Will poured this as we walked around the facility and it rapidly evolved, showing baking spices (lots of cinnamon), sweet mixed berry pie, with a touch of graphite...profile had very fine grained tannins, lush and balanced, finishing more to the red fruit dominated side of the spectrum. Nice.

Domaine A. et P. de Villaine

Bouzeron Aligoté 2013

Made from the other White Burgundy grape, Aligote. Made by probably the most famous name in Burgundy, Aubert de Villaine and his American born wife, Pamela. Aubert is the wine director and proprietor of the Domaine de la Romanee Conti. This is his own personal project. The wine itself:- Mid lemon in colour. Herbs, citrus and a touch of aniseed on the nose. The palate is very citric and mineral with a noticeable saline note. More palate weight than it had a few years ago. Medium minus Acid. Drinking well now and no need to cellar any further. Great winemaking at an affordable price. — 4 years ago

Taylor Fladgate

20 Years Old Tawny Port Blend

20-year tawny a personal favorite. I’m always amazed how good this is whenever I have a glass. Taylor run today from Oporto by descendants of the Yeatman & Fladgate families, both of which have been partners in the firm since 1830s. Complex aromas rich with dried fruits & nutty spice. On the palate apricot and sweet berry flavors with honey and toasted nut notes, well balanced nice acidity. Lingering finish ending smooth with oaky nutty character. Very Nice. Price keeps going up each year. Tasting Sample. — 4 years ago
