Blackberries & black cherries with some cigarbox, thyme, black peppercorns and black tea essence. Plus a whiff of exotic (sandalwood?).
Strong (yet polished) tannins, high acidity and noticeable alcohol - yet after 11y this mix has created a very intriguing, complex and highly drinkable wine. Superb, though probably not everybody’s cup of tea.

Raspberry, dried blackberry and cedar form a distinct potpourri when considered with the dried rose petal and orange bitters. There is a fleeting fruitiness that approaches strawberries dropped into a coniferous fire. Lovely, if firm tannins support a whale of a wine. Amazing depth with Roobios tea leafs, tobacco, graphite, bay leaf, bing cherry, dried black cherry and black currants on carbon paper and campfire ash, driven deep into a charred wormwood and dusty schist. This is an incredible Nebbiolo that over-delivers in every sense! #piedmontesewines #nebbiolo #nebbiololover #nebbiololife #nebbiolodalba #alba #Demarie #piedmont #babybarolo #italianred #Italianwine — 8 years ago
I've been hesitant to open this because the Tre Stelle was so challenging and this is supposedly the more structured of the two, but I shouldn't have been, as this is a wonderful and phenomenally easy-to-drink wine, about as friendly as young nebbiolo ever gets. If it is indeed more tannic than the Tre Stelle, that is only the case on paper as the structure is smoothed over by rich, very polished fruit that still has the gloss of youthfulness but whose flavors are well past the primary into savory and earthy territory with a sticky grip. It opens with a dazzlingly complex aromatic punch of herbs and a succulent meatiness, which quiets down soon enough but the wine never shuts down. The fruit is in crimson tones, plummy at first and then more towards apple skin hours later as it backs down from that initial generosity, but throughout the bottle it is full and plump, finishing with stony earth. I'm slightly tempted to call it autumnal just on account of the complexion but that doesn't seem to work because there is a very clear sense of freshness here. No leatheriness or other badges of oxidative aging that surface fairly often even in nebbiolos that I *like*: this bottle captured everything in pristine condition, making an exceptionally delicious wine with a robust inner core but a flawless veneer with no rough edges, brimming with generous, richly constituted nebbiolo goodness. — 10 years ago

NYWFC Governor Cup winner 2014 (Best overall NYS wine). Nose of tropical citrus topped with fresh, homemade whipped cream. Continues with lovely pineapple and honeyed cantaloupe flavor and finished with some subtle Asian spiced pear. Well deserved win by a name that's been around since 1985! 2012 Cayuse "Bionic Frog" Walla Walla Valley Syrah. In honor of my finally having made the grade to be blessed to receive a Frog allocation from Mr. Baron, I thought I’d celebrate by pulling the cork on this beast which was gifted to me by the most generous and revered wine Connoisseur, the man with the palate I so very much respect, the Rake of the Left Coast, the right honorable Mr. Bill Bender (@Bill Bender) First off, I find the Bionic Frog in general to be one of the most hedonistic, completely over the top and playful expressions of Syrah on the planet which of course, places it squarely in my wheelhouse. Still the most unique wine in the Cayuse lineup, and arguably one of the most sought after Syrah’s around. And now on to this vintage in particular, which none other than the esteemed Jeb Dunnuck(the one reviewer who I find to have a palate most closely aligned with my own) described with the enticing phrase “flirts with perfection.” Opaque, impenetrable ink blue in the stem. Wild, typical stoney Cayuse aromatics of black olives, bacon fat and dark fruits with notes of violets and lavender. A combination savory/sweet palate with olive tapenade, mushrooms and tar combined with sweet black plums and blueberry compote. Super rich, lush mouth feel. Dense concentration. Amazingly pleasing salinity on the lengthy finish. A full-throttle Porsche Cup Car lap of Road America, complete with The Kink, wine experience. (A track day we need to reprise soon Chuck). Sensory overload in the best way possible! The Frog knows! — 7 years ago
Lovely cab blend strongly expressing green paper and raspberries note with a body of young tannins. Needs a decade. — 8 years ago
Cup of (Long Island Ice) tea anyone? — 8 years ago
Quite earthy and her all. A touch of greenness, but at the same time comes across as ripe--a characteristic of the '96 Bordeaux. I like this, but it's probably not everybody's cup of tea. — 10 years ago
The 2012 is not the Trader Joe's version mentioned in 2009 reviews. We are loving the balance between the fruit and butterscotch finish, which comes through in a Hampton Inn paper cup. — 10 years ago

Summertime with girl with a paper fan, slow and relaxing, a young woman without too much complexity, simpler, not straightforward but like light breeze in summer afternoon. Kinda quiet. — 7 years ago

Dark, opaque brick red. Clear. Moderate plus intensity in the color, compact rim, and no sediment. Wine breathed in bottle for 3 hrs. Very interesting nose, never would have guessed a Bordeaux Blend. Starts off with chocolate filled with alcohol. Lots of black cherries, vanilla, baking spices and dried fruit. A little savory on the palate and drying. A tad sweet too. Moderate body with moderate tannins (6/10). Texture is kind of like sand paper. Long finish. Nose was a little of putting for me. Would love to try this with more air time. — 9 years ago
