Muddled Wines

Château Cadet-Pontet

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend 2009

Rich crimson with clear-pink-oranging rim. It's turning the corner. Deep muddled red fruits on the nose. On tasting, I find a nutty green light olive (I wish I could better describe this note as I get it a lot and it's a muddled thing with olives and a wood or nut). Over the 1.5 hour decant, this note has subsided a bit. Nice full bodied sphere in the mouth, with medium plus tannins that linger--with the nuttiness that is perhaps pecan. Enough sting and dryness to suggest that this bottle should be rested in the deep dark corners of your mind.

2012, sprinkled rose petal on crushed rock which muddled stewed strawberries.... I would drink this everyday in my life if I could. — 8 years ago

Crozes-Hermitage Syrah 2015

Plump fruit, slight carbonic, punchy and fresh tannin, adds a textural crunch almost. Love this wine, muddled blackberry, cracked pepper, warm stones, menthol on the nose. Palate is more blackberry and crispy black cherry, black olive, beef, and loads of stoney mineral character. — 8 years ago

Bonavita

Faro Nerello Blend 2013

This is a very good wine, and that's coming from someone who is not a huge Nerello fan. Muddled berries and funk on the nose. Tart cherries, dried flowers, leather, tar and smoke on the palate. Crisp. High acidity makes this a great food wine. — 8 years ago

Darkness Syrah 2011

Amazing nose on this one with wildflowers, perfume, and cinnamon. Palate is ripe muddled blackberries, baking spice, and scorched earth. Would probably rate this closer to a 9 without the nose, but I call em as I smell em. — 10 years ago

Sonoma Stage Vineyard Pinot Noir 2008

A nice example of Sonoma Coast pinots. Still had ample fruit, but it was a bit muddled and there was definitely some heat/alcohol present. Very pleasant earthiness. — 10 years ago

The Infinite Monkey Theorem

Petite Sirah

Wine from Colorado - Denver, to be precise - who'da thunk it? Big nose of boysenberry, blackberry and blueberry. Also hints of menthol, saddle leather, graham cracker, a touch of cola or root beer, and smoked meat. Although a dense purple in color - not surprising for a Petite Sirah - the palette comes across fairly light bodied. Dark berries, muddled and stewed a bit - the tannins definitely grip and hold, but not without a decent punch of acidity. Light earth and subtle oak are also of note. Not to knock the Colorado wine scene (which I know very little about), but this is surprisingly good. — 11 years ago

Moulin des Dames Bergerac Sec White Blend 2012

Medium weight, refreshing acidity, floral components reminiscent of top line Sancerre. Slightly muddled finish. Would have been nice if there was mored clarity of flavor in the aftertaste. — 11 years ago

Monthly WTF wine group meet up.

Potpourri, fresh squeezed blackberries, currant, and candied teriyaki. Plush on the palate, with more acidity than ‘14. Structure here seems more beefed up. I waited an hour or so to try, and it was very soft. Full fruit spectrum (red, blue and black). Muddled mulberry with a flavor punch finish. Thanks for opening

@Joshua Fisher : I do too. I’ll be out that way in 7 weeks and will probably drop by Brasswood for either a Montagu or Bevan tasting as well as to enjoy some of that killer mozzarella! Maybe I’ll see you around there.

Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2016

Brand new release, quite frankly much too young to assess fairly. Very muted aromatics, muddled fruit and slightly vanillin character going on. Minerality presents on the finish, but overall the initial impression is one of high alcohol, mega extraction and the potential for brilliant fruit way down the road. Retasting commences tomorrow night. — 8 years ago

Jura on my mind. Loving the dank aromatics that lead into muddled potpourri. Floral, mushroom, earth tones. Red fruit spectrum ( straw & rasp ) - just enough tannin, acid strong! — 10 years ago

San Antonio Valley Petite Sirah 2013

First of all, the bouquet is layered with muddled dark fruit. Second, the body is complex in all the right reasons. It's concentrated, intense, fresh, elegant and carries the sweetness of the fruit. Raspberries and blackberries on the tongue, with a beautiful dark purple color. Medium body, medium acidity and ripe tannins round out this seductive wine. — 11 years ago

Porto Vintage Port Blend 1983

Have this bottle open for a week now, and it's still holding up very nicely. A tad shy and muddled on the first day. Elegant and fragrant, pretty aromatics of toffee, cherry, cocoapowder dust, hint of cappuccino and a minty leafy character that I like. Starting to show tawny-like now: hot honey glazed nuts and dried figs in spades. — 11 years ago

Cantina Roccafiore

Montefalco Rosso Sagrantino 2012

Solid, great depth and purity without being heavy handed or over the top with the beastly structure Sagrantino can have. Muddled black berry, dried black cherry, leather, coffee grounds, tar and clove on the finish. Tannins are powerful and held in balance by the wines high acid. For $28 I’d drink this again for sure. Perfect for tomato braised meatballs, spaghetti squash, and seared mushrooms. — 8 years ago

Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso 2014

Rather dark and brooding for Refosco with smoky quality. Fruit is a bit muddled on the nose but what is there so far is fairly fresh with a straight-from-the-earth character. Savory spices, pine forest, dark cassis and green vegetal aromas showing up after awhile. Fruit is slowly unwinding but tannins are fairly embedded and smooth on the palate. Give it another 2-3 years. — 8 years ago

Côte du Py Morgon Gamay 2015

If you know me, you know I'm a Beaujolais nut. I haven't particularly enjoyed most 15s. They're hot, flabby, muddled, and confused. #NotMyBeaujolais HOWEVER, this is the first 2015 that I've really loved. Just goes to show what wine in the hands of a master can be. Even in a hot vintage like 2015, Foillard really worked some magic. This wine was not lacking in acid. So juicy. Mouth watering. Clean and precise. Happy juice. Smile inducing. — 9 years ago

Mclaren Vale Grenache 2014

Second day stunner! It's got a Campari note going with a underripe blackberry, ferns, muddled cocktail cherry, light twizzler accents, acidity is like a no wake zone compared to yesterday but I can still tell it had dual volvo pentas. — 12 years ago

Domaine Camus-Bruchon & Fils

Pimentiers Vieilles Vignes Savigny-lès-Beaune Pinot Noir 2010

Great purity, just a bit taut right now. Should resolve nicely. There are some deep, leafy, earthy aromatics. Oak is judged well. This has nice freshness to it. Definitely on the rustic side. Jenna thinks it's "dirty and dusty like licking the floor of a primitive structure." It is very hot to her as well, both nasally and to drink. The wine Polaner calls blood orange on this bottling and Camus' other VV Savigny bottling. He is completely right we both agree. 85 year old vines. A solid value for the cellar. Jenna says the quality of this is like unfiltered Honest Tea to clean and bright Steaz. This is a touch more muddled at the moment with a bit of bitterness but I am confident this will clarify and integrate nicely with time. Old school for purists. Jenna says it's "minty and herbal, fennel or anise." Definitely anise/fennel. Some balsamicky older barrel aromas and also nuttier newer oak aromas, too. Good balance. This really does have some soil aromas to it. A touch hot (alcohol) right but I imagine it will cool down with some time in bottle. — 12 years ago
