The Annex Ale Project from Calgary brewed by Metes & Bounds XPA is a world class IPA clean, crisp full bodied but not over powering, it’s a keeper. If you like Big Canadian IPAs this one’s for you. Well-executed example of the more modern, super-ripe, plush Zin style. Not a style I am crazy about in general, but this one is not over-the-top. Nose has juicy blackberry, a bit of maple syrup, and some sandestony gravel. Plush and deeply fruity, but within bounds, keeping some balance throughout the long finish. 12 years and tightly wound, but made leaps and bounds coming to the fore. Incredible rim to rim India black. Botanically rich in licorice and rosemary bordering on Ünderberg. Raspberry liqueur, blackberry jam and charred oak aromas mellowed by sweet madura tobacco and clove. Mint chocolate and vanilla, black currant, hazelnut coffee, and just enough smoke and graphite, to keep it complex and real. A powerfully structured wine from ancient, storied vines! — 9 years ago
