Road Less Traveled Yakima Valley Cabernet Franc 2014

Deep dense highly extracted purple red; excellent clarity at margins. Black currant fruit leather in nose with a touch of butter (later, butterscotch), funk, raspberry, blueberry, white pepper, spice and canned spinach (evolves into canned corn and something like dill; complex nose). Black currant, blackberry and black (later white) pepper flavors with cherry cola and a touch of spearmint in finish. (Sorry, it’s not a goth affectation or such; I just call it as I perceive it, honestly, scientifically, as best I can make it out). Some skin bitterness with moderate skin astringency. I’m really digging this complexity and depth of flavor... — 5 years ago

Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese Riesling 2016

First Himmelreich I’ve tasted from the 2016 vintage and as always this producer sets the bar awfully high. So far this confirms my preference for the Spätlese wines of the vintage over the Kabinett but only by the slimmest of margins. The best examples have all retained supercharged acidity but offer the ample weight for complete balance. This one is in perfect harmony right now. Grapefruit, green apple, apricot and intense floral quality. Minerality kicks in right up front and doesn’t quit. Ideal food wine. — 6 years ago

Family feud., Round 2
To Kalon “The O.G” lost to its sibling this. Evening by the slightest of margins. Bad Ass in a glass nonetheless 🙌

Beau Vigne

Estate Stags Ridge Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

@Mike R @Carl Fischer @Ron R @Joe Lucca @David L Believe me when I say that it was an absolute toss up between the Beau Vigne Estate and the Morlet "Coeur de Vallee". The Beau Vigne Estate came in 2nd with the Width of a hair. It was Magnificent. Marilyn Monroe wasn't as full bodied as this beauty!! Enjoyed from a 1.5L and it was blew us away. A nose that enticed you to relish in it's opulence. Deep dark blue and black fruit. You could truly tell that drinking this one sip at a time was going to be a Hedonistic experience. It was beyond perfect in the Front, Mid and Back Palate. We found ourselves taking minutes between sips due to it's Marathon Length finish. Why 2nd place you may ask By the slightest of margins?? I think this may be a 100 point wine in a few years. without a doubt it is THAT GOOD!!
The Morlet wasn't as big and boisterous BUT it have the edge in regards to Balance and being well rounded at this time. The blind tasting reveals which wine is best now & not which will be best in the future. It was AWESOME to discuss these as the night went on!!

Weingut Keller

von der Fels Rheinhessen Riesling 2016

Many regard Keller as the best in the Rheinheesen and this bone dry racy Riesling is one of the best I’ve ever had. Von Der Fels is Man on Wire. A tight rope walker with razor thin margins. Austere and beautiful. Incredible juxtaposition from calm lemon, vanilla aloe, and sage to a level of acid I haven’t seen before.

And still spectacularly harmonious.

That’s what I love about Riesling. Use it for your snacking before dinner. A glass a night over a few nights. The acid keeps it fresh for so much longer. There weeks In the fridge is fine

Valravn

Sonoma County Old Vine Zinfandel 2014

Inky purple, more clarity at margins. Violet, anise, butterscotch, red fruit and maybe a pork note in nose. (Paired with veggie lasagna so it's the wine with the meaty smell). Bright strawberry, cherry and later blackberry and prune flavors in mouth, light skin astringency on top of tongue, slight mint and lactic flavors in aftertaste. The opposite of big and rich for a Zin, delicately flavored, good acidity, but still a healthy hit of ethanol, well masked. A keeper for an everyday red — 6 years ago

Valpolicella Classico Superiore Corvina Blend 2001

This is dark fruit with brown/orange margins. The age opens up all these nuanced tobacco and savory mint flavors and a finish that doesn’t quite. Rich and deep with enough acidity to float a boat. These wines are always such a treat. — 6 years ago
