Tony and his wife Herta purchased 30 acres of land in the Napa Valley with the magic ingredient - location. With a splash of Malbec added, aromas of dark berry fruit and cigar box spice. On the palate flavors of black cherry and raspberry with cacao, licorice and herb notes. Fine tannins, nice acidity, good balance on long finish ending with fruit and cedar notes. This wine is in a GOOD spot right now. CT Average of about 93, and I'd say that this is about right. 93-95 as this one still has probably 7-8 years before it is pop and pour. Acidic at the opening, but the patience (which we didn't have) would have served us well. Cabernet power from the front. Blackberry preserves, hint of mint, white pepper, hint of clove, middle that goes a little bit herbal, but still very considerable black fruit. Finishes strong, with pepper, spice. I know the last 750 I have is in danger, and hopefully I can also lay off the mag for at least a couple of years. — 7 years ago

Beautiful wine! I’ve had other vintages of this wine in the past. I tasted this 2017 out of 1.5L. Felt quite feminine in nature. Medium plus acidity and a long finish. Red fruited, and earthy. Dried cranberries, and tarragon. Seemed like a kaleidoscope of aromas and flavors. Very happy to have tried this! — 4 years ago

It’s a bit unusual in the land of Syrah. But this estate is home to a little patch of old vine Gamay which does very nice things in the bottle. The wine has the bright, vibrant red fruits typical of the Gamay grape. But on the finish, there’s a kick of black pepper more typical of the Rhone Valley. It makes for an appealing combination. It’s complex, a little geeky, and highly drinkable – a mix that we find pretty irresistible.

In 1964, while looking for additional land to expand his Tenuta dell’Ornellaia vineyard, Marchese Lodovico Antinori discovered & acquired property of Tenuta di Biserno near Bibbona. A blend of Merlot, Cab Sauv, Petit Verdot and Cab Franc & aged for 12 months in French oak, concentrated aromas of ripe currants and sweet spice. On the palate currant and black fruit flavors, elegant fine tannins with cacao and tobacco tones. Lingering ending with an earthy character. Very nice. Tasting Sample. — 7 years ago

Couldn’t resist opening one of the newly arrived 2016 Pajès from Roagna. It opens with an earthy/clay nose and is a translucent brick red in the glass. Hints of rose, cherry, cocoa and red berries mixed with sharp, drying tannins. High potential and glad to have a benchmark while I lay a few more of these and some Vecchi Vitis down for a while. — 4 years ago
