I Vigneti

Giacomo Borgogno & Figli

Antichi Vigneti Propri Riserva Barolo Nebbiolo 1967

Opened just prior to service and poured into a decanter. This is the second time I have had the opportunity to enjoy the 1967 Riserva although, the previous bottle was a more recent library release from the Borgogno cellars. This was a period release and yet, the experience was similar.

The 1967 Riserva pours a deep garnet color with a transparent core moving towards a slightly orange rim. Medium viscosity with no staining of the tears and some slight signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous but showing much more power than the ‘67 Abbazia SS Annunziata we drank on the same evening. Again, there is a lovely mix of ripe and desiccated red and dark fruits with forest floor, porcini, dried roses, tar, some tobacco, dried herbs, dusty earth and exotic spices. On the palate, the wine is dry; medium+ tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long a savory. My previous notes suggested to drink now and while I still hold fast to that statement, twice in the span of 18mos with two separate bottlings encourages me to be a bit more bullish and suggest this has many years, perhaps decades left in the tank.

Bodegas Roda

Reserva Roda I Rioja Red Blend 2011

Roda 1 is one of my go to Rioja loves 💗 & is superb for the money @ £35-£40 😉 The 01, 04 & 05 were all top wines 👍 The 2011 is showing well & a great example of a modern Rioja 👍 Nit a deep as other vintages & more fresher but fab still 😎

📍 Roda 1 2011 Reserva

🏵 92 points w/ more potential for sure

🍇 91% Tempranillo, 8% Graciano & 1% Garnacha

🍷 Deep opaque ruby w/ a purple hint

👃 Soft smokey oak through dark cherry w/ touches of herbs, cocoa, peppered spices, red berry liquorice, earth & blackcurrant

👄 Med body of creamy dark cherry bathed in cocoa w/ a black berry fruit & raspberry kick evolving into sone prune & date tones as it opens after a few hours - the Grenache brings a lovely freshness to this vintage 👍

🎯 Med+ dry cherry driven dark fruit linger w/ a hit of minerality & a red berry fruit kick

🍛 Went amazing on its own & with Mrs Es 🍗 curry 😍 Pics on Instagram ⏩

The Prisoner Wine Company

The Prisoner Napa Valley Zinfandel Blend

Great blend! Tried it a few times - pairs well w/ steak & also went well with Italian dishes (pizza, veal or meat based pasta dishes w/ red sauce). Tried 2011 and 12: I prefer the 11 but both are great! — 11 years ago

Château Musar

Bekaa Valley Red Blend 2011

It was Father’s Day and I had decided on grilled rack of lamb for dinner so I selected this bottle of 2011 Chateau Musar rouge from our cellar. According to Musar’s records, the 2011 vintage was one of the most challenging since the early 1990’s. It was ultimately a late-maturing vintage with harvest taking place on October 13th, the latest since the 1983 vintage!

I decanted this bottle about eight hours prior to dinner. It should be noted that immediately upon opening, the bouquet was strikingly gorgeous with powerful aromatics that were obvious from several feet away and this trait carried through until dinner time.

In the glass, the wine presents a deep garnet color. Slightly turbid with a near opaque core. On the nose, black plums, blackberries, cassis, tobacco, organic earth, exotic spices, leather, spiced meat, and pomegranate. I detect a touch of VA as well. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the nose with an added bit of red rope licorice. Lovely, long, savory…amazing. This was a brilliant compliment to the lamb (which was served with beets and goat cheese and fattoush) and everything I wanted in a Musar tonight. Drinking well now with a hefty decant and I expect well cellared examples to drink well past 2035.

Château de Beaucastel

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend 2013

Drinking very well in youth. Very dark fruited & tannic. I suspect more MVD & less Grenache. Consistently excellent & the living embodiment of producer over vintage. — 9 years ago

@Ron R - I hear you. They've had assorted experiences with Brett which really corresponds to how much an individual can or cannot tolerate. 2003 in particular was a tough one with the heat.

Anthony. Had a vineyard visit in 2013 and can confirm Beaucastel is using more Mourvèdre in the blend. They are putting it down to climate change with warmer longer summers and Mouvedre better able to handle those conditions than Grenache. Other CDP producers are following their lead.

Château Cheval Blanc

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 1970

Fruit has gone mostly, but some dark baked prunes and figginess remains. Nice old Bordeaux, on its last legs I think. Stood up really well for the last 45 years though... — 10 years ago
