Pax Mahle Wines

Sonoma-Hillsides Syrah 2019

It must be my lucky week, because I’ve had two spectacular California Syrahs back-to-back (and it’s often months between good showings). Of course, given the hoopla surrounding this wine, anything less would be a dissapointment. This was an equally good, but very different wine from the Presq’uile: where that wine was pretty, finessed, peppery and heavy on the savory, tapenade notes (California’s homage to the N Rhone), this wine has brawn and bravado (unapologetically new world, but in a good way): rich, ripe, concentrated dark fruit, meat on the smoker, cedar, charcoal, underbrush. The tannins are ripe, but substantial and drying on the finish, cutting it short. This will be a much better wine in 5+ years to give those little guys some time to chillax…

That’s quite the French labeled Californian wine bottling!

Have you tried Jolie Laide Syrahs? In my mind, another wonderful Syrah from CA. Scott Schulz was and still may be an assistant wine maker at Pax.

@Joe Davant I’ve enjoyed all of the Jolie Laide wines that I’ve tried but have yet to try the Syrahs. Will add ‘em to the list!

Buehler Vineyards

Napa Valley Zinfandel

Such a good Zin...consistently excellent without all the hoopla and overrating. Have never had Buehler’s Cab or Zin and not loved it — 5 years ago

Louis Jadot

Beaune 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2015

Maybe I bought into the marketing but I was expecting something markedly different or special. Not to say that this isn’t a good wine, it’s very well balanced and smooth with good flavors but it’s not something to which I would expect the level of hoopla at this price point. — 4 years ago

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC)

Grands Échézeaux Pinot Noir

So smooth with a beautiful and lasting finish. Delicate and powerful at the same time. Simply superb. Worth all of the hoopla and praise. May I be lucky enough to taste it again one day. Thank you for the generous gift — 6 years ago

Cappella Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2007

Still just thick and massive. Got lost a little in the hoopla but showed striking depth and viscosity, albeit the fruit was a little reticent. I’ve had this for 10 years and I would have loved to watch this develop over the length of a long dinner paired with an A5 Kōbe Strip. If you have it slow ox and decant. — 5 years ago
