Libero Picpoul de Pinet

Awesome unique wine, barrels aged underwater! Briney salinity to the nose with citrus providing a prickly component. Gives way to honeysuckle and floral notes. The attack has this sweetness that transitions beautifully into a limestone feel on the mid. Minerality lingers and the finish is soft and sweet. Excellent wine, it's uniqueness is not merely a marketing ploy! Love the ocean and minerality and structure and transitions! — 11 years ago

2013. It has a medium ruby color that's slightly cloudy with a young nose of cherries and tabacco while showing a tint of mustiness and slight volatile acidity. The mouth is dry and full of fruit recalling the cherries and adding some cranberries and dark chocolate. All and all it's a good wine but a bit dry and acidic for my taste. More marketing from Gredos. Good but not great. 15% alcohol with a medium color depth???? — 12 years ago

I do so love this Cab Franc from Organized Crime. Cute winery with a good marketing "story line", they also make some damn fine wines, with this being the pick of the litter for me. Dry, excellent bite, a wine for special nights.

Domaine Vincent Prunier

Meursault Chardonnay 2008

Located in Cote de Beaune, south of Volnay and north of Puligny Montrachet. Meursault ("Murr-so") has historically been Burgundy's center for white wine production. In fact, nearly all of the 2.5 million bottles produced from 440 ha (1,090 acres) are whites. The soil is a mixture of marl and chalk and is perfectly suited to the production of chardonnay. Meursault wines are known for aromas of hazelnuts, honey and vanilla for its aromas and creamy, almost olive oilllike texture. There are no grand crus in Meursault, though Les Perrières, Les Genevrières and Les Charmes produce remarkable wines. Further, some of the most well-known vineyards of Meursault such as Narvaux and Limozin are not premier cru but Villages-classified vineyards. Recent top vintages include 2008, 2007, 2005, 2002, 1999, 1996, 1993, 1990.

With 437ha. of vineyards dedicated to Villages wine or Premier Cru, Meursault has the largest area permitted to be planted in white wine in the Cote-d'Or. Furthermore, despite the fact that the village lacks even one grand cru, Meursault has historically been Burgundy's center for white wine production, in the past even more so than Puligny-Montrachet or Chassagne-Montrachet. While much of those two villages had in the past been planted to red grapes, Meursault has always been white wine territory. In fact, the modern day vineyard of Les Combettes in Puligny-Montrachet, which forms a continuous chain with the premier crus of Meursault, was once considered part of Meursault and not Puligny, where the many nearby vineyards produced red wine. There are several important factors that determine the reputation of Meursault. Primarily, the soil throughout most of Meursault is perfectly suited to the production of chardonnay; it is a mixture of marl and chalk, that when combined with a largely east or southeast exposure creates healthy grapes that are full of character. Another factor correlates to geology, though in a very different way. Meursault's high water table allows its residents to carve deep, cold cellars "perfect for the production of wine" into the chalky, stony soil. So, while large negociants from Beaune dominated the production and marketing of Burgundy throughout time, Meursault remained a wine of its own citizens. Contributing to this, since red wine has been more prized throughout time, these same negociants looked elsewhere for sources because the wine of Meursault has always been white.

What makes the wine so special? The most common descriptors attached to Meursault are hazelnuts, honey and vanilla for its aromas and creamy for its texture. However, this simplifies things quite a bit. In most cases, Meursault despite an almost olive-oil texture is countered by a precise mineral character, stoniness and a more refined overall palate than, for instance, Chassagne-Montrachet. It's the unique stony/mineral character that often gets lost when tasting Meursault, as many concentrate on the ripe, hedonistic primary flavors and aromas. It's the bipolarity of the wine, the interplay of both factors, that makes Meursault one of the most sought after white wines in the world. As mentioned above, there are no grand crus in Meursault, though many would argue that Perrieres, Genevrieres and Charmes can attain these lofty heights in the hands of the best producers. Further, some of the most well-known vineyards of Meursault such as Narvaux and Limozin are not premier cru but Villages-classified vineyards, though again, the best examples are clearly of higher quality. source: http://www.burgundywinecompany.com/wines/display.php?subregion=Meursault

Ormilles Côtes de Provence Rosé Blend 2015

Proof that good French Rose from Provence doesn't have to break the bank or spend ludicrous amounts of marketing money. Nice pale pink with that classic ocean air, crushed cranberry, red berry citrusy nose. Light & dry on the palate. Total summer into late fall Rose for $10! I would be glad to promote this wine under my new brand "The Big Fat Guido" while I grow a man braid. Should out sell the leading 750ml wine cooler rose out on the cash grab Rose market. — 10 years ago

Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

After being completely disappointed with the 2010 and feeling like I bought the "Emperor's New Wine," the 2011 blew me away. Leaves me wondering if the 2010 was flawed because this one was amazing. Smooth, brooding but balanced after a two hour decant - on the palate: beautiful and intense dark fruits, cocoa, faintest minerality, silky tannins. I'm still not entirely sure it's worth the price tag and the "luxury" themed marketing of it sorely undercuts the serious juice in the bottle. This was wine of the (early) night...and a nice surprise given I expected not to like it and for a 2011 I'm blown away. — 11 years ago

Reserve @Cabernet 2009

This is a fruit forward cab that we really like a lot. It's got a fantastic nose with leather and spice and a touch of oak. The taste is fruit forward but not sweet, a bit earthy, spicy, very shoe-leathery, just delicious for this price point! Paired great with our wood-grilled rib-eye, filet, and top sirloin. Would love to try this bottle in 5-10 years. Only thing is that unfortunately the label is really bad. They need a new marketing and design guy that can make the label as sexy as their wine.

Azienda Agricola Valentini

Trebbiano d'Abruzzo 1998

Really complicated on these so suspect days, expose themselves with concepts such as: tradition, terroir, identity without falling into the most sinister rhetoric if not sounds just trite and hypocritical as the counterfeit currency with which even large-scale industries - supported by marketing - pays back its inattentive mass audience riding the wave of the country of origin or protected typicality. A diabolical mechanism this one for which even the most noble ideas probably the right practices and good experiences completed in the scale of centuries to human measure and not on massive industrial scale, are trivialized by sleazy slogan, emptied of meaning to be more or less surreptitious thanks to barbaric persuasion techniques and brain-washing propaganda.
Yet with the Valentini's Trebbiano you may not groped to summarize in words if not by drawing on terms so appropriate to express it. Now concerning this iconic label we've got behind it a local grape variety, a real family and a great wine that collect in a bottle the past and present story of a side of Abruzzo who claims to defeats victories and sacrifices to dominate the abuses (on and of) nature, miseries and splendours of agricultural seasons. Places, people, vision, wines such as Valentini are here to remind us how each bottle stay so proudly standing as non-reproducible beauty and fermented goodness expressing all its artisanal uniqueness and authenticity which are just that suspect to industrial wine production in manufacturing chains on standardized quantities; wines that are all equal to themselves even though wine itself is not much left at the end of the day/cycle. Trebbiano d'Abruzzo Valentini 1998 is what we have to rate right now: rusticity with class; style, purity and glory of a local grape recognized by many admirers from all over the world: act local think global this is another slogan-cliché which in this specific Valentini's wine exemple could sounds a little less false and more effective.

Château La Canorgue

Le Coin Perdu Côtes du Luberon

2012 Vintage. This Syrah-based organic wind has a great depth to it - rich ruby color, fine aromas of black fruit and a pleasant earthiness and well balanced tannin and black fruit on the palate. Surprisingly harmonious and elegant, long on the palate and with great finesse. Because of the hype from the 2006 film A Good Year for which this wine was created it is in short supply but it is a lot more than some press agent's marketing creation. It's a lovely wine that holds its own in any company — 11 years ago
