A rarity. On the nose, honey, quince, pastry. Rich and fatty on the palate. Candied lemons, nectarine, spice, and minerality. Perhaps some oxi handling? Delicious and interesting drop.
Note: From a tiny vineyard of 0.2 hectares of mixed Garnacha Blanca and Garnacha Gris planted on sandy quartz and granite, El Tamboril is a remarkable example of how Spain has begun to redefine itself as capable of producing white wines that rival those of Germany and Burgundy. Hand harvested and whole cluster pressed directly into a 600 liter barrel, El Tamboril remains in the same cask for its native fermentation and aging. It rests there for 14 months after which it is bottled directly from barrel. — 8 years ago
Largas canillas. Rojo rubí intenso. Alto contenido alcoholico. Delicado pero intenso al paladar. — 9 years ago
A holiday wine need not break the bank. A good, inexpensive Pinot Noir is hard to find, so why not go garnacha/grenache? This 7 Navas Joven from the Alto Aberche Valley in Spain is under $15 and packs a lot of punch with its combination of cranberry and raspberry fruitiness, herbs, cinnamon, and spice. It's everything nice. I paired this with leftover Thanksgiving turkey and stuffing. Don't underestimate garnacha. (sample) — 10 years ago

I gave this 15 or 20 minutes and then decided if I was going to drink wine tonight, then it wouldn't be this. 4 hours later and the nose is more Alto Moncayo than Alto Moncayo... Banana-Vanilla Creme Pie on steroids. Unfortunately it doesn't quite carry the weight of Alto on the palate, but at $12, is a comparison anything but unfair? This is shockingly good and a completely different wine than what I tasted 4 hours ago. — 8 years ago
2013, 14,5 vol. $ 30,00. — 10 years ago
The 2011 vintage in Cariñena was hot and dry, with yields up to ten percent lower than average. The smaller crop gave the grapes more time to ripen on the vine, with harvest ten days later than typical. The village of Paniza enjoyed an even longer growing season than neighbors in lower, hotter elevations, with excellent flavor development in the grapes. Harvest took place from mid-‐September through the end of October. After harvest, the grapes were destemmed, crushed and fermented primarily in stainless steel tanks. Grapes from lower elevations went through a cold maceration for several days to extract aromatics and berry fruit flavors, while grapes from the higher elevations were sent directly to the fermenter for an extended fermentation to preserve the intensity of flavor in the old vine grapes. The wine was aged for 6 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels for additional roundness and texture. The wine tastes of ripe, juicy wild strawberry, red cherry and blackberry framed by supple tannins. Floral notes of violet and rose petal complement the oak notes of mocha and vanilla on the finish.Try Alto Cinco with roasted meats & poultry or hearty fish stews. With crispness and silky tannins, it’s delightful paired with tomato dishes such as classic Catalan grilled bread with tomatoes, garlic and olive oil or simply on its own. — 11 years ago
Red cherry, strawberry, plum, fresh herbs, balsamic, and hint of lavender fills an aromatic and deep nose. Soft juicy entry with flavors mimic the nose but lightly candied. Medium to full body that’s beautifully textured. Bright acidity and polished tannins.
This is in great contrast to Alto Moncayo, showing off PN-like elegance. Still packing a punch though. Need to find couple of bottles to cellar. — 4 years ago

Get hip to this rose. More like a brown. Super geek wine. Oxidative on purpose. Reminds me of...wait for it...bourbon — 8 years ago

Great wine. Tasted it blind and it reminded me a lot of Alto Moncayo. Well balanced between straightforward and powerful fruit and hints of smokey oak. Delicious. — 11 years ago

My favorite of German Blanco’s single-vineyard wines in Bierzo. Field blend of mostly Mencia with some Garnacha Tintorera, Godello and Doña Blanca from a small plot with very old vines (100+ years old) in Albares de la Ribera, in Bierzo Alto (very cold, high altitude). Co-fermented in amphora and aged for 13 months in neutral oak. Red fruit aromas and flavors. Fresh, lively — 3 years ago
