Duncan Savage

Savage Syrah 2018

I’ve been excited to revisit Duncan Savage’s eponymous red from the 2018 vintage, which I last tried around four years ago having just shaken off a bout of Covid, senses struggling. Even then, it was clear how promising this wine was, and now, with a little more bottle age, it’s absolutely singing. It’s a pure, bright fruited 100% Syrah which has a tremendous savoury character, with a telltale bolt of iron on the nose. On the palate it has enormous structure, with sappy blood orange fruit and white pepper, and wonderful minerality. This is such an utterly drinkable wine, with more than enough in the tank for another decade or two. Wonderful stuff. — a year ago

Griffin's Lair Vineyard Syrah 2007

Last week Duncan told me to open these. Holy shit. Wife drank most of it. Bought on release, all the adolescent tannin and hyper fruit have mellowed. Reminds me of Gonon with the salinity, the focus, and the scary balance at 14.7%. A meditation. — 2 years ago

Twomey

Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 2013

Twomey Cellars originated with a vineyard, the Soda Canyon Ranch in southeastern Napa Valley, which the Duncan family, owners of Silver Oak Cellars, acquired in 1999. Dark Ruby with ripe red fruit aromas and complex spice. On the palate strawberry and cherry flavors with cinnamon, tobacco and espresso notes. Rich full fleshy tannins, nice acidity and balance on s lingering finish ending with earthy tones. — 9 years ago

Western Cape Red Blend 2016

Good, but goes down a little harsh and with more sour and crunch than I remember since I first tried a couple years ago. Pours with a brick filter draped over dark crimson. Beefy bloody notes hanging around with magic marker upfront, then averages itself out with fruits and herbs and becomes altogether a vibrant lighter thing. Little hints of iodine and violet - just barely. — 3 years ago

Excellent. Approachable Nebbiolo, 2013--just enough age to make it enjoyable. Getting ready for our upcoming Italy trip! Looking for recommendations. Visiting Barolo et al and Puglia this time around.

Friends: where should we go? Who should we meet? What should we drink?

Nose of Black cassis, blackberries, blueberries, plum, expresso, tar, coffee and dry red florals. Tannins are still a bit chewy with strong wood influence. The palate fruits are; black cherries, black plum & plums, plums, plums, plum, cake, blueberries, black tea, black licorice, soft dusty minerals with nice acidity. Still an infant. Arnot-Roberts

Watson Ranch Chardonnay 2015

Somm David T
9.3

I am not the biggest fan of a lot of CA Chardonnays but, I have come to fully embrace Arnot-Roberts, this vintage & terrior.

This is not a wine you want well chilled...better just under room temperature. When well chilled, it loses too much of its beauty & sheer elegance. Shows more CA Chardonnay structure/backbone with big green apple. When it is cold it does pair better with the Lattebusche Piave Vecchio...a drier, harder cheese. When it warms, the best choice is the Jasper Hill Farms soft, full cream. white, Harbison.

After it has warmed & had about a half-hour of air, the nose is rounded, lush & ruby. Sweet & sour lemon, green & golden apple, overripe pineapple, guava, green melon, kiwi with skin, lime candy, caramel, gentle, white spice, just a glimmer of, herbaceousness, chalk, grey volcanics, melted, brown butter with yellow flowers/lilies, jasmine, spring flowers with mixed greens.

The body is rich, lush and full, a touch gluey with good viscosity. Sweet & sour lemon, green & golden apple, overripe pineapple, guava, green melon, kiwi with skin, tangerine, lime candy, honeysuckle, caramel, cream, gentle, white spice, just a glimmer of, herbaceousness, chalk, grey volcanics, limestone, melted, brown butter with yellow flowers/lilies, jasmine, spring flowers with mixed greens. The acidity is phat, round and really well done. The rich, well balanced, elegant, long finish is delicious, settling into persistent, delicate white spice.

Just misses 94.
