I re-learned how good this producer is. It’s complex, layered and textured, with just the right amounts of almond, brioche and honied notes on the nose and mid palate. While the acidity is fairly restrained, this presents like it has many more years ahead of it.
There’s an informality and freshness to this wine which belies its quality and sheer elegance. If you don’t want to spend on Aubert, Kistler et al., you should pay a visit to this producer.

Young, but great upside potential. Old vine Marsanne from the lieu-dit Aubert, east of the Sainte Epine vineyard. One of the original St Joseph appellation parcels, tended by Trollat for decades according to the spec sheet. Delightful. — 4 years ago

My bottle was tight as well. But this was NUTS out of barrel. I have faith it will blossom.

Obviously, not as nuanced and textured as the single vineyard bottlings, but no complaints from us. Less amplification, but still possess the Aubert signature on the mid palate. Roasted pineapples and lychees caress the palate. Great balance and acidity. — 6 months ago

PARK AVENUE ESTATE VINEYARD SONOMA COAST CHARDONNAY 2019

Two years since my last bottle, and the time definitely helped elevate the overall profile.

Annual anniversary opening of an Aubert as they are my wife’s favorite (and certainly up there in favorites for me as well).

The inaugural vintage for Park Avenue, this is a wine that bursts in to the room Kramer-style. No trepidation in profile for a first vintage wine, Park Avenue screams Aubert all day with some of the hallmarks of others in the lineup. To me, this seemed like a marriage of Larry Hyde (more acidity; bright) and CIX (more opulent; power). In the glass, I was surprised how clear this poured, and not the typical slightly cloudy look I’m used to. Aromatics of white peach, lemon scone, baking spices, and sea salt. The palate has Aubert richness and signature lemon cream, as well as a good vein of acidity (similar to LH, maybe also Powder House). Toes the line slightly toward elegant vs power (Lauren, CIX). Gorgeous mid-palate texture, lingering finish. Another home-run for the Aubert portfolio.

Not tried this one yet and great call out on the cloudy look. Forgot about that until I had one at my brother m-in-laws the other day.

Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay 2016

Golden color; creamed lemon on the nose. Very elegant aromatics. In the mouth huge creamy lemon curd with awesome flavors and finish. Acid balance is perfect as well giving it a French signature. Best California Chardonnay since the Aubert Hyde and son. Even more elegant! Great wine and should drink well for 5-7 years. — 5 years ago

Lots of fun bottles were popped at Al’s hosting this past weekend for his birthday celebration. All were served blind. 1 sparkler, 2 whites, 6 reds and 1 dessert wine.

This was en mag. WOW. Slightly cloudy in the glass. My first guess when looking at it was Marcassin, but it wasn’t waxy enough on the palate. Smelled of rich lemon cream, powdered lemon bars and juicy fruit (that should always be my key to guessing PM). A powerhouse on the palate with juicy tropical fruits, marshmallow, and sweet marzipan. Gorgeous stuff. I called this 2012 Aubert Ritchie.

A beautiful, refined, bright, creamy wine. Tasting honeydew, white peach, butter, cashew, oak, and a hint of honey. Just what I would expect from Aubert (my favorite Chardonnays). — 7 months ago

Domaine A. et P. de Villaine

Bouzeron Aligoté 2019

Burgundy 🇫🇷 is renowned for its Chardonnay, but did you know that Aligoté is the second most planted white grape in the region? 👀

Some of the finest Aligoté comes from ‘Bouzeron,’ an appellation in the Côte Chalonnaise region (north of Mâconnais, south of Côte d’Or).

In a land of Pinot Noir & Chardonnay, Bouzeron AOC is 100% dedicated to producing Aligoté 🙌🏻. In fact, it first became a legally-recognized AOC in 1998 thanks in part to the efforts of Aubert de Villaine, the winemaker behind this beautiful bottle. 👏🏻

Interestingly, Aubert is also a co-owner & co-Director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) (and, as an aside, was on the tasting panel for the 1976 Judgement of Paris 😆)…

Yet, instead of devoting himself exclusively to DRC — one of the world’s most famous and prestigious estates — he and his wife, Pamela (a California native), were enchanted by the possibilities of Aligoté, and terroir of Bouzeron, where they put down roots through “Domaine de Villaine”.

This wine is Domaine de Villaine Bouzeron AOC (2019). It has a shimmering lemon robe and bouquet of white blossom, just-ripe white peach, yellow apple, pear, citrus, fennel, and wet slate notes. It’s remarkably fresh on the palate with mouth-watering acidity balancing the warm (14% ABV) and fruit-driven profile. It’s positively delicious!

We’re pairing it w/ pan-seared sea scallops, roasted asparagus, & lemon-herbed farro…

Cheers to nurturing the diversity of Burgundy in all of its splendor! 🥂

Sylvain Gauthier Cuvée Aubert St. Joseph Syrah 2017

Painfully young, but that old vine syrah and granite density make it hard to resist. Dark, angry, pure granitic bite on the back half, needs some time, but the ripeness and warming fruit is coaxed out with air. I see a lot of potential here. — 4 years ago

“Piss” yellow color. Faint bubbles of effervescence. Burnt salted caramel nose. Candied lemon/lime. Distinctly front- and mid-palette loaded. Lemon curd. Very long finish. Excellent freshness for a 10 year old. Quite good, though Aubert is comparable with half the age. — 5 years ago

Marcassin

Marcassin Vineyard Chardonnay 2012

One of the better Chardonnays on the table. Although I think this one was bested a scosche by a 2015 Aubert Sugar Shack. This is the opinion of one man! I really was not getting much on the nose. Possibly due to my impatience of wanting to try within 5 minutes of cork pop? Potentially. Definitely on the herbal side. Palate of yellow fruit, guava, baked green apples. More to the leaner than full throttle side. Finishing with some stiff oak tannin, this one is going to hang around for a WHILE I believe. I think I'd like to try this in a few more years if I am lucky... — 6 years ago

Similar experience to when I had this about 5 months ago (pear and roasted lemon battling sea salt and cashew notes). Undoubtedly powerful and undoubtedly Marcassin. However, I will say that I picked up butterscotch here that I normally pick up with added age on Marcassin chards...have never gotten it this early. I enjoy that characteristic so it didn’t detract, just found it interesting.
