Complicated! My first try of Madeira. Mince pie in a glass. If it was like this one, I can see why the founding forefathers drank 50 bottles of Madeira after signing the Declaration of Independence. — 7 years ago
Sooooooo.. yeah. That happened. For real. First any d'yquem is cause for celebration. One significantly older than you is cause for alarm. Also from 375ml, so i would surmise "fully mature". Slight seepage, go figure, and during a cork test I got some movement out of it, so decided it was go time.
Note it was apparently still doing its job, the som got it out with my Durand in one piece. And yes. I will bring my Durand to a restaurant with old bottles for corkage because why would I want the poor som to go nuts and lose his mind with a screw-pull?
Colour was dark. Castrol gtx20-50 (used) with definite fading to amber. Reddish tones nearly through out. Browny honey y orangey colour as a whole, and remarkably dark.
Nose was intoxicating. As always. Very... bright. Alive. The aromas and high tones betrayed the dark colour. Honey, apricots, creme brulee scents poured forth readily, and i regret choosing to not give this wine a half hour in the decanter prior to consuming. Thicker than a regular white wine, but not like oil.
Still had some acidity. Texture was other worldly. Initial tastes were peary honey botritis fruity, and those faded to more stone fruit, apricots, honey comb, i swear light aromas of orange blossoms. We lingered with this for about an hour, well worth the time.

Lots of fun bottles were popped at Al’s hosting this past weekend for his birthday celebration. All were served blind. 1 sparkler, 2 whites, 6 reds and 1 dessert wine.
En mag. Probably the most difficult wine of the night to identify. Hardly anyone even got close to calling this cab. I was leaning Grenache or ripe vintage burgundy as I thought I was detecting a bit of whole cluster usage due to the lifted profile and stemmy/spice red fruit notes. Yet by the end of the night, the structure beefed up and the spice turned more sweet. Lovely cherry liqueur, sandalwood, baking spices and baked red fruited pie notes. — 7 years ago
This was simply sublime and a fantastic celebration treat! — 8 years ago
Decanted, deep spices that open slowly, long intensity with increasing focus and a long taper. We only waited two hours after pouring through a Vinturi. We could have waited more if we were going to be in town tomorrow. A great 60th birthday celebration. 2001 on 10/22/17. — 9 years ago

Tonight we had a little fanfare for my Dad's 64th bday. This man has been thru a lot in the last few months. The celebration was twofold.... as my Mom rested on the couch, her last day of this treatment cycle tomorrow. I have been dreading birthdays for a while now, a reminder of fleeting youth, but I had an epiphany.... that each year of life that passes is indeed a blessing and a very good reminder. I got him personalized golf balls as a gift - something I put some thought into that I thought he might enjoy using on an almost daily basis. The price was more than I wanted to spend, but it's not really the gift, or the price of the gift that matters. Or the tangible gift at all. Or the wine, or where we are. At the end of the day, just being together is always the greatest of gifts. — 10 years ago

Celebrating my son’s first #birthday certainly merits the serving of some lovely wine 🍾🍷 What a wonderfully challenging yet humbling year it’s been raising a tiny baby into a little boy with a big heart, a loud laugh, and a captivating smile. I hope and pray today’s celebration is but one of many chapters.
My final bottle of Caymus from before the fall (if you will). Drank remarkably well this evening. Loads of mulled spices, eucalyptus and clove, plums, blackberries, and worn leather. Resolved tannins. Very smooth. — 6 years ago
