Monticol Riserva Alto Adige Pinot Noir 2020

2020 vintage.
Founded in 1893, a growers’ cooperative with 143 currant growers.
Pinot Noir vineyards are between 450-600 metres above sea level.
Warm days and chilly nights in Alto Adige.
Ripe strawberries, roses and dark flowers with bright, dark cherries.
Seamless balance between tannins and acidity.
Spicy with a mineral finish. And it’s Riserva.

Hildegard Estate Bottled Santa Maria Valley White Blend 2010

Wow! Pinot gris/blanc and aligote Vinicius like a great CA Chardonnay, coming out in the best possible way. Took some time to open up but when it did it was outstanding. Still-fresh ripe pear, a hint of minerality, some cheese rind, the oxidative butterscotch and lemon curd are hidden under layers of freshness and acidity and there’s no hazelnut then you’d get in a chardonnay. What a wine! I’d hate to get it blind but it reminds of the fine examples of aged whites from Terlan, Vorberg in particular — 3 years ago

Rarity Pinot Bianco 2006

One of the finest white wines I’ve had the pleasure of tasting. I’ve been a long-time Cantina Terlan fan, and have always had a soft spot for their $20 Pinot Bianco… but this takes things to another level. Polished, slightly saline-citrusy acidity, with muted limestone, and focused white peach and lime. It’s hard to condense this into a few descriptors. If you’re a Batard-Montrachet or Corton-Charlemagne fan, but can do with a little less French oak influence, and a little Muscadet Sevre et Maine, then this could be your jam. Looking forward to my next Alto Adige visit. Eataly Dallas (thanks to Derrek). — 3 years ago

Terlaner Classico White Blend 2013

Alto Adige on full display with tart bitterness of pitted fruits and slate. Lush tropical notes and a hint of vanilla (the Chard?) round out the frame. Not much of a finish to speak of. Crisp enough for seafood, but with a ripeness that will pair well with a host of cheeses or your favorite South Asian hot sauce. QPR heaven too! — 8 years ago
