Last week was a combo of 4th Friday and Open That Bottle Night on back to back nights. Needless to say, the lineup between both days was full of heavy hitters, so I’m only posting standout bottles.
Yes, that is a 3L of ‘87 Dunn Howell in a gorgeous etched bottle. I think the bottle may have outshone the wine, and that was no easy feat! Compared to the ‘88 I opened a year and a half ago, the vintage and larger format here have kept time hostage as this has aged beautifully. Dusty aromatics of brambly fruits, cassis, currant, graphite, fig, leather and even some baking spices remained. The profile on the palate is warm and soft...ripe baked blackberries, peppercorn, old graham cracker and cedar shavings. Integrated at this stage, but this powered through 5+hrs in bottle and in decanter with zero drop off. Still sporting Dunn’s classic Howell power. — 6 years ago
Another 4th Friday for the books, and one of the best of the year!
Prunes and cranberry; acidity and tannin have fallen off; tertiary flavors carry it...old cedar; muddled strawberry tart and old red licorice. Its best days are behind it, but it’s still got life. — 7 years ago
A few of us stopped by the wine storage facility today to “celebrate” the 4th in style...wine style. American zins and American Sparklers. Happy 4th 🇺🇸
Reinforced my thinking of Schramsberg Sparklers being able to age decently. Really no sign of decline here. Fruit may be a tad less tart, but still flavorful. Kiwi, watermelon and a lot of pomegranate. Acid is still searing through the mid palate with a yeasty/herbaceous finish. — 7 years ago

Our monthly 4th Friday event at the storage facility. No requirements, just wine you want to share with others! Always an enjoyable time.
Special place in my heart for this winery. A few months ago, I had an '88 go celebrate my birth year. It was STELLAR. This is pushing forward easily...after an hour of air, the fruit and secondary earth and funk notes came out. So good! Thanks Walter! — 8 years ago

delicious and fruity rosè- perfect for a basic 4th. — 8 years ago
Good, as expected. Happy 4th — 5 years ago

My second time to have this, and I think it showed slightly better (or maybe different?). Ready to go at pop. Lots of sweet and fresh fruits here like raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, plum with cedar, grilled peppercorns and violets. Dense on the palate but not overwhelming. A distinct sweetness to it. Licorice, baked mixed berry pie, baking spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. If you have any, this is a good time to open. — 6 years ago
1990 DRC Richebourg. Lunch at Tap while DS was visiting. Drank this side by side to the 1985 Griotte-Chambertin. Hard to pick a fave- they were very different. This one had much more fruit and texture to it and I might have favored it slightly. — 7 years ago
Looks like the 4th of July fireworks came a week late! Wet leather, tobacco, macerated cherries, fresh terricherry peppercorns sububtly roll up on your nose. Ripe black plums, Blackberries, cedar, baking spices, and dark cocoa flood through your mouth. Terrific finish full of life and lasts for a good 2 minutes. Dark ruby color, mouthwatering acidity, smooth tannins, so well balanced. such a treat. Have had a few bottles of early 1990’s cask 23, but all have been fairly disappointing until this bottle. Boris’ wine tasting on July 4th (our favorite). Great with Goat Cheese with herbs & smoked gouda. — 7 years ago
Another 4th Friday for the books! What a variety this month!
Fantastic nose of honeysuckle, peach pith, and a slight bit of mint. I actually think this needs quite a bit more time...or a very long decant. Felt like it never really opened to its potential in the amount of time it was open. Wouldn’t be scared to hold for a few more years. — 8 years ago

Another 4th Friday for the books! Insane pulls this month to follow up the most epic month (April) that we’ve ever had!
It’s beating the dead horse, but these are just insanely good (though their Blue Slide Ridge pinots are my favorite). The concentration and complexity is what separates these. Acidic on the front palate and the mid palate is Blackberry tart, rhubarb pie, and blueberries. Finish is still tight...years to go. — 8 years ago

Winemaker Joseph J. Wagner is a 4th generation winemaker from a family with farming and winemaking roots in the Napa Valley since 1906. Deep Ruby (darkest Pinot almost looks like a Cab) with aromas of ripe berries and spice notes. The palate shows rich black fruits, blackberries, plums and black cherries, vanilla spice, cedar and cacao. Rich soft tannins, firm acidity on lingering finish ending with mineral tones. Nice! — 9 years ago
