The wine served tonight is the 2016 Meerlust Rubicon Cabernet Sauvignon Blend. This is from the Meerlust Estate Stellenbosch, South Africa. The blend is 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot.

On the nose there is cherry, strawberry, plum, green bell pepper, herbal notes, vanilla, licorice, minerals and dark rich soil.

On the palate I am getting black cherry, blackberry, strawberry, black currant, licorice, green bell pepper, vanilla, some oak, minerality and soil.

The wine is full bodied with a smooth mouthfeel medium + acidity and medium + grippy mouthcoating tannins that leaves you with a ling black fruit mineral finish. Eventhough we are still in the in the midst of fall, there is a feel of winter crisp and clean on ones face. This weekend please stay safe and healthy and let us enjoy family and friends for they are what keep us strong. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

Nailed it with Afghan Lamb Kebabs. Out of the gate it’s bright with a Bordeaux character... then turns slightly underripe vegetal... by hour 4 this all smooths out. It was fun tasting it’s evolution for 6+ hours. Great wine, and recommend with hearty food.

Fresh dark berries and red cherries. Rustic, dusty truffles, medicinal notes along side pyrazine. Cedar wood and Tabasco. Medium integrated tannins and bright acidity.

Deep red garnet in color. Black currents coffee, cocoa, and a hint of oak. Nice dark fruits, plums and blackberries on a smooth approach and a medium to long finish. Very Bordeaux like blend. Excellent.

30+ minute decant and could have used more. Dark fruit and Bordeaux elements on the nose. First few glasses (I’m a fan of small pours) were overly spicy, which was unattractive. With air and time it dissipated and a silky texture emerged with plums, oak, and ever so slight vanilla. No mistaking this for anything but South African. Medium plus depth. Medium plus finish. Not my style, and the early spice turned me off, but this grew on me. However, I don’t think it has very much aging potential. Glad I tried this for the price. Wouldn’t turn a glass down but probably not a return buyer.

I’d place this among the top ten best wines I’ve had. While not as peppery as some South African reds (which I love), it’s amazingly smooth and well balanced. A delicious wine and fir about $30 a bottle a real bargain

Let it open up in a decanter for 30 minutes. Great with bison cheeseburgers.
