Château Thivin
Famille Geoffray Côte de Brouilly Gamay

14% alcohol cru Beaujolais. It’s very pretty and well made but like wtf is going on. It tastes like it could have come from Russian river valley. Not that there’s anything wrong with that necessarily and again it’s very tasty

Head-turner. Super fragrant, with dark berry, lavender and smoke aromas and a touch of volatility. This is super complex and layered, at the same time powerful and structured, as well as precise and elegant. Fruit comes in waves, balanced by earthy tones and some granitic energy giving focus to the finish. Great stuff.

Wow. Pure and exhilaratingly ripe. Translucent magenta in the glass. Perfumed and packed with purple raspberries. Finishing with a pleasant brambly zing. Only a slight hint of tannins, and while I think this could handle some time in bottle it’s just so pretty right now. One of the top three producers in Bojo imo.

Bought six bottles. This was the fifth. Each one a disappointment. Sour. Backward fruit. Too acidic. Normally I like Beaujolais but sorry to say not on this occasion. Mistake.

Tasty. Dark fruits- blackberry? Dark tart cherry, with savory herbaceous notes too, tannins decent but not overpowering.

Château Thivin, Côte de Brouilly, Vintage 2019, ABV 14.1%.
Côte de Brouilly is a Beaujolais Cru named after the blue volcanic hillsides from which this wine comes, and where Château Thivin is located, in the northern part of the Beaujolais region. 🇫🇷
This wine is made exclusively from Gamay grapes which were grown on old vines, which may have contributed to the concentrated fruit aromas and flavors of this wine. 🍇
This wine has a nice structure. It is dry with medium(+) acidity, a medium(+) body, high alcohol, medium(-) tannins, and medium(+) intensity of aromas and flavors including black cherry, blackberry, plum, raisin, violet, lavender, chalk and slate. It has aging potential, but is delish even as a baby.
This wine was aged for 6 months in oak foudres prior to bottling.
We’ve paired this wine with a chicken schnitzel and a watercress-apple and fennel relish. It is a lovely complement.

Absolutely excellent in youth. Aromatics and palate are exuberant dark berries & black pepper. Perfectly balanced between fruit & structure. This has a long life ahead, but hard to ignore as a youngster. Truly great.
