The 2003 Léoville-Poyferré has always been one of this infamous vintage’s success stories. Perhaps in recent years it has lost some of its vigour on the nose with black plum, brown spices, leather and that light Bovril aroma, but there is better delineation than many others. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and quite savoury. It is beginning to show some dryness and little monotony on the finish. I wonder whether its best days are behind it? Still a very decent showing however. Tasted at the Léoville-Poyferré vertical at the château with Sara Lecompte Cuvelier. (Neal Martin, Vinous, September 2022)

Some red fruit and plum. Cedar, leather but fresh. Good balance. Pure and all in place. Some iron

The 2003 Chateau Leoville Poyferre is a spectacular wine from this warm vintage in Bordeaux. The decadent, intense aromatics of tar, blackberry cobbler and mocha are brilliantly woven together with sandalwood and black tea undertones that take shape in the glass. Highly viscous and rich, yet maintaining good acidity, the dense mouthfeel adds a crescendo to the deep core of dark fruits and chocolate covered espresso bean that sing in harmony on the palate. Glorious to savor now, the 2003 Leoville Poyferre will cellar well for another decade. Drink 2020-2033- 95

Dark berry fruit, intense and tangy. Graphite, iron, lots of minerality. Deep and lush on the palate. Quite opulent.... almost exotic. Very good.

This may be the most balanced and deep wine I've had. Green peppers and tobacco on the nose and palette with that awesome medicinal thing going. Like toro, it dissolves on the tongue.

Happily surprised this is not a hot mess and has a LONG life ahead. This is proof of great vineyard management #leovillepoyferre #poyfferre #stjulien #bordeaux #2003scorchinghotweather

Nice dark earthy overtones. Smooth and easy. Soft on nose and palate. Some complexity though a bit modern in style
