Château La Tour de Mons

Margaux Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2005

2009 vintage. At that time this estate was owned by French Bank Crédit Agricole, but it was sold in late 2019 to the Perrodo family (owners of Marquis d'Alesme and Labégorce in Margaux). Considered very good terroir, fairly close to the Gironde with 30 years old vines and some very old plots. The blend in this vintage was 55% merlot, 40% cabernet sauvignon and 5% petit verdot. Very attractive nose after 30 minutes in the glass, ripe cassis and flowers. More elegance than sheer power, this is drinking well today with a nice balance between cassis fruit, good acidity and well-integrated oak and alcohol (abv 14%). With a little bit more depth and more fruit in the finish this could have competed with some of the crus classés. In any case very reasonable value at 29 euros and what you'd expect from a good Margaux at this price point. — 4 years ago

Château Marquis d'Alesme

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

2015 vintage. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Excellent wine from a Cru Classé that remains very much under the radar and, therefore, the prices are very reasonable for the quality. This is also the smallest Margaux Cru Classé with 16 hectares of vines. Tasted at the Château alongside the 2017. While the 2017 is a very good Classic Margaux, it doesn't have the concentration and depth of the 2015, the first produced in the new winemaking facilities. It combines grace and power with impeccable balance and a very long finish. Also tasted the first vintage of an attractive new white wine ( 2022 vintage), produced at sister estate Château Labégorce, an intriguing blend from Chardonnay, Albariño and Petit Manseng (label is not finished yet). — 7 months ago
