Birthday wine from Tim. Concentrated lemon-gold color in the glass. Slightly reductive (struck match, burnt rubber). Highly complex nose of saffron and wax (botrytis), chilled honeydew and cantaloupe, melon custard (even a suggestion of durian), dried orange peel, faint candied rose petals (terpenes), fresh king trumpet mushrooms (some development, but early in it), and a powerful impression of wet stones and crushed rock.

There's some viscosity in the mouth. Alcohol is slightly elevated. Seems around 13%. Elevated acidity, strong, clean, and mostly tartaric. Modest phenolic bitterness with a sweet radish impression.

On the finish it stops surprisingly short given the intensity on the mid palate, but this is a classic example where the length of the finish shouldn't determine quality. The complex and balanced nature of the nose carried this for me. A real treat! — 10 years ago

2005 Ganevat Sainte Cécyle Appealing chocolate-berry and black trumpet aromas. Medium bodied, fresh and youthful. Earthy, dense fruit leaning towards dark berries with hints of spice and lurking complexity. Well structured and long. Lovely. — 10 years ago

A friend brought a 1991 Mag of Araujo Estate Eisele Vineyard, we believe the 1st. Vintage. When first opened it had a little funk. Decanted for 2-hrs. This wine was beautiful, it had no bricking, deep ruby color. The nose had cassis, leather, cedar, & a hint of red & black fruit. The mouth feel was decadent with velvety tannins. In the palate black currant, cedar, touch leather & earthiness. Very impressive & paired wonderful with a rid roast with trumpet mushrooms! Thanks Rick — 9 years ago

2012 Patton Valley Vineyard Queen Bee - Blackberries, cherry cola, and hints of black trumpet mushrooms. Black cherries, blackberries, cinnamon and mace gush on the tongue. Reduction is a bit obvious in this wine, but as with most Evening Land wines, this works itself out and integrates well with the wine over time. Flint and burnt matchsticks on the nose, alongside with portobello mushrooms, baked blackberries, and brambles. Blackberries, Italian plums, and creme de cassis in greet the tongue, cherries, blueberries and fresh orange peel on the mid-palate, with anise seed, white trumpet mushrooms, and subtle tones of basalt. Though they don't list the vintage, I will say that the 2015 release is amazing. Full fruit with a definite blackberry at mid-palate (blend of Syrah, Grenache and heavy Tempranillo). The finish is smooth and begs for more imbibing. I can't wait to see how this ages. Pairs well with sourdough bread and wounded trumpet players. — 10 years ago
