Russian River Valley Zinfandel 2015

Cherries, tobacco and mint on the nose. A sharp finish where the alcohol doesn’t blend as well as it should. Maybe another year or two in the bottle would bring it together. I have a few more bottles, so we will see. — 7 years ago

Henschke

Hill of Grace Vineyard Shiraz 1996

Still a very dense crimson with no tawny rim, at 28 years of age but the tawniness is beginning. A certain feral, Animale, earthy note. Palate is ultra smooth, medium bodied / very savoury yet with a sweetish earthy note with a hint of raspberry. Jancis Robinson was invited by Stephen Henschke to a vertical tasting at the winery in May 2013 to cover vintages back to the late 1950’s. She described the 1996 as “pure hedonism “ and gave it 19/20. Medium plus intensity on the delicious palate with those gnarled old 160 year vines showing through. An absolutely stunning wine - one of the best we’ve had this year. — 2 years ago

Sensational. A rare moment. Really thinking about it. You were probably the only one in the world experiencing that wine.

@Jan de Weerd Possibly Jan. Not sure of the Annual production but it wouldn’t be much as it is sourced from a single vineyard whereas Penfolds Grange has a far larger annual production having multiple vineyard sources.

Opus One

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2009

Delectable Wine
9.2

Bright, dark red with ruby highlights. Very dark aromas of black cherry, cassis, blueberry and licorice. Then rather plush, sweet and full for Opus One, conveying a chocolatey ripeness to its dark berry flavors. Finishes with smooth tannins that build without going dry. This wine was broad and smooth from the outset. Today it's a generous mouthful but a bit clunky compared to some more recent vintages. This was reportedly the first vintage to include a significant percentage of Petit Verdot, and that may explain the wine's emphasis on black and blue fruits. Dominus Estate

Dominus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2009

Delectable Wine
9.4

Bright, full ruby-red. Highly complex, thoroughly ripe scents of black raspberry, cassis, dark plum, tar, tobacco, mocha and minerals, lifted by a violet topnote. Wonderfully suave and fine-grained but still quite youthful, spreading out to coat the palate without leaving any undue impression of weight. Shows a distinct black cherry medicinal reserve. This very smooth wine finishes with a broad dusting of ripe tannins and steadily building length. Approachable now owing to its successfully integrated acidity and tannins, but I'd rather give this beauty a bit more time in the cellar. (Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, July 2019) — 7 years ago
